France to Start Doué on Left Wing Against Spain

Didier Deschamps is preparing a subtle, but telling, change for France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain in Dallas, with Désiré Doué expected to get the nod ahead of Bradley Barcola on the left wing.

The two have shared duties throughout the tournament, each offering a different flavour to France’s attacking play. This time, all signs point to Doué. His tighter control in small spaces, his ability to link play inside and drift between the lines, fits the kind of game many expect against Spain: less open field, more chessboard.

Kylian Mbappé will still be there, of course. His training load has been carefully managed this week, raising a flicker of concern, but Deschamps has eased any doubts and the captain is set to start. France are one win from a third straight World Cup final; Mbappé was never likely to watch that from the bench.

The real debate sits a little deeper.

Aurélien Tchouaméni has missed the last two weeks through injury, opening the door for Manu Koné to step in. Koné has not wasted the opportunity, impressing with his energy and bite in midfield. Yet with the stakes at their highest, Deschamps appears ready to restore Tchouaméni at the base of midfield, trusting his experience and positional discipline against Spain’s carousel of possession.

It is a harsh call on Koné, but exactly the kind of ruthless decision that has defined Deschamps’ tenure.

The good news for France: there are no absentees. For a semi-final of this magnitude, that is a luxury. It allows Deschamps to lean on continuity at the back, where Mike Maignan anchors a defence that has grown increasingly assured as the tournament has progressed.

Lucas Digne is expected to hold the left-back spot, with Jules Koundé on the right and the pairing of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano in central defence. It is a back four built for duels, but also comfortable enough on the ball to resist Spain’s press.

Ahead of Tchouaméni, Adrien Rabiot should reprise his role as the left-sided midfielder, shuttling between lines and offering balance when Mbappé and Doué surge forward. In the band of three behind the striker, Doué on the left is likely to be joined by Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé, a trio brimming with flair and unpredictability.

All of it funnels towards Mbappé, who will lead the line, tasked with turning half-chances into history.

France’s expected XI vs Spain

Mike Maignan; Lucas Digne, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Koundé; Adrien Rabiot, Aurélien Tchouaméni; Désiré Doué, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé; Kylian Mbappé.

Deschamps has his pieces. Spain will have the ball. The question now is whether this blend of control, power and incision can carry France to yet another World Cup final.
