Manchester United Targets Youri Tielemans After Ederson Deal Falls Through
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has taken another sharp turn. Ederson is out. Youri Tielemans is suddenly very close.
After days of uncertainty around the Atalanta midfielder’s medical, the deal that had been described as “100 per cent confirmed” in June has officially died. Atalanta received formal notification that United had pulled the plug, with the Premier League club walking away after what were described as “several sessions” of medical tests.
Atalanta, for their part, are adamant there is no issue. They maintain Ederson is “100% fit, ready to play football”, pointing to his involvement with Brazil at the World Cup and welcoming him back for the final year of his contract. United, unconvinced, have moved on.
And they have moved quickly.
United turn to Tielemans
David Ornstein reports that United are now in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, seizing on what they view as a clear market opportunity. The Belgium international, 29, is understood to favour a switch to Old Trafford despite interest from elsewhere, with discussions ongoing between all parties to close the deal.
The move would bring proven Premier League quality and experience into an area Erik ten Hag’s side have ring-fenced as a priority this summer. United want two or three new midfielders, alongside at least one full-back and a left-winger. Tielemans, with his game intelligence and range of passing, fits the brief of a ready-made starter rather than a project.
His arrival would also follow the expected capture of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, lined up as United’s first signing of the window. The Brazilian is viewed as part of the club’s longer-term core, while Tielemans would plug an immediate gap in a department that has lacked control and depth.
The speed of the pivot from Ederson to Tielemans underlines how ruthlessly United are now prepared to act when a deal no longer aligns with their medical or financial thresholds. Once doubts over Ederson’s medical profile grew, the club stepped away and pushed resource into a more straightforward target already within the Premier League.
£35m clause opens the door
The numbers around Tielemans make the move even more attractive. According to Daily Telegraph journalist John Percy, the midfielder has a £35m release clause in his Aston Villa contract, a figure that makes a transfer to United “very likely”.
For a player in his prime, with extensive Premier League and international experience, £35m represents the kind of value United have too often ignored in past windows. This time, they appear determined not to hesitate.
Villa, who finished just one place below United last season, are already preparing for life after Tielemans. Percy reports they are in the final stages of signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi in what would be a club-record deal, a move that would effectively clear the way for the Belgian’s departure.
The dynamic is clear: Villa secure their long-term midfield piece, United secure a seasoned operator for a defined release fee, and Tielemans gets the move he is understood to prefer.
United’s midfield picture is changing fast. Ederson is back in Bergamo. Andrey Santos is on his way. Youri Tielemans now stands on the brink.
If Old Trafford wants a new heartbeat in the middle of the pitch, this is where it starts.
