Chiefs Intensify Bid for Phili as du Preez Nears Stellies Return

Kaizer Chiefs are pushing hard to deliver a marquee attacking signing before the 2026/27 Betway Premiership kicks off – and the focus has locked firmly on Stellenbosch winger Jayden Adams Phili.

From their pre-season base in Spain, Fernando da Cruz and the Chiefs hierarchy are driving negotiations aimed at bringing the junior international to Naturena, with the club now prepared to sweeten an already complex deal.

The two clubs have kept their cards close to their chests in public, but talks are understood to be moving forward. Chiefs, sensing an opportunity as the window develops, are working on a revised proposal designed to finally break the deadlock.

This chase did not start in July. Chiefs first made their move in the January transfer window, when Phili’s form drew attention beyond South Africa’s borders and an offer arrived from Al-Ittihad Tripoli in Libya. Stellenbosch stood firm. Losing a key winger mid-season, without the time or market leverage to find a proper replacement, never made sense for a club still building its own momentum.

Now the landscape looks very different.

Phili has entered the final year of his contract. That single detail changes everything for Stellenbosch. Letting a prized asset walk away for nothing at the end of the campaign would be a brutal outcome for a club that has recruited smartly and sold even smarter in recent seasons. A transfer, if the price and structure are right, suddenly feels more logical than a year-long gamble.

Behind the scenes, one part of the puzzle has already slid into place. Ashley du Preez, once Stellenbosch’s spearhead and later a major acquisition for Chiefs, has agreed personal terms with his former club. His return to the Cape is understood to hinge on one decisive condition: Phili must move the other way.

The deal, though, is no simple straight swap.

Chiefs are now believed to be ready to add another player to the package, along with a cash payment, to close the gap between the clubs’ valuations. It is a clear signal of intent from Naturena. Da Cruz wants Phili, and he wants him in time to shape the team’s attacking patterns before the new season settles into its grind.

The identity of the additional player remains under wraps. That secrecy adds another layer of intrigue, especially for a Chiefs squad already in flux as the new coach trims and tweaks during the Spanish camp.

For Stellenbosch, the decision cuts both ways. On one side lies an enhanced offer: a proven forward in du Preez, another player, and cash on the table. On the other, the temptation to keep Phili for one more campaign, squeeze every last bit of influence out of him, and then accept the risk of losing him for free.

It is a football calculation as old as the transfer market itself: immediate value versus one final season from a player who can tilt tight games.

Four years after Chiefs prised du Preez away from Stellies, the move looks set to reverse. The forward appears ready to return to familiar surroundings, to a club and a fan base that know exactly what he brings.

But the entire operation still hinges on one decisive signature.

If Phili heads to Naturena, the dominoes fall and du Preez walks back into his old dressing room. If Stellenbosch hold their nerve and refuse to budge, Chiefs will have to decide just how far they are willing to go to land a winger they clearly see as central to their rebuild.
