World Cup Day 5 Review and Day 6 Preview

World Cup Day 5 Highlights

The World Cup continued with a surprising twist on Day 5 as all four matches ended in draws. No team managed to claim victory, which is unusual for a tournament built on winning and losing. Yet, every match held its own excitement, from Cape Verde's defensive stand against Spain to the intense battle between Iran and New Zealand late at night. Maybe draws aren't as dull as they seem.

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde (Group H)

Cape Verde’s defense impressed everyone by holding Spain to a goalless draw despite Spain dominating possession at 74% and outshooting their opponents in expected goals 2.16 to 0.28. The Blue Sharks gave away just one foul all game, showcasing discipline and resilience against one of the world’s top teams. This result shakes up Group H, increasing the chances of a Spain-Argentina Round of 16 encounter. Defense won the day here.

Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Group G)

Belgium struggled against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, falling behind early to a powerful strike from Emam Ashour. Despite Romelu Lukaku’s presence and pressure in the box, Belgium couldn’t find the winner. An own goal by Egypt’s Hany leveled the score, but both sides left the pitch uncertain who will top Group G. This Belgian squad hasn’t looked like past powerhouses.

Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)

A rough and physical clash saw Saudi Arabia and Uruguay split points after a late equalizer from Uruguay’s Araújo. The match was marked by hard tackles and some loss of control from the referee. Uruguay might be the stronger team on paper but didn’t prove it convincingly here. All teams in Group H now share a point each, making the group wide open.

Iran 2-2 New Zealand (Group G)

This match brought some real drama. Iranian fans filled SoFi Stadium, cheering loudly despite the team’s challenges, including an interrupted domestic season. New Zealand’s Elijah Just scored twice, tying for the Golden Boot lead, but Iran fought back each time to draw level. The match was far from perfect football but thrilling enough to keep viewers awake late into the night.
