Gianni Infantino Responds to Critics of the 2026 World Cup
The 2026 World Cup wrapped up recently, but instead of highlighting the excitement and unity the tournament brought, FIFA President Gianni Infantino chose to respond sharply to those who criticized the event.
In a detailed post on social media, Infantino directed his words toward people he said missed the essence of the tournament. He expressed regret for those who did not experience the joy shared by families and fans, blaming their focus on negativity.
“To all of you who missed watching kids, babies, grandparents, and parents come together for the beautiful game, I say sorry that the matches are now over and sorry that you missed all that joy and togetherness. Sorry that you were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all.”
Infantino then targeted journalists, accusing some of spreading false information and hate rather than participating in the event’s spirit.
“To those behind their pens and papers, behind their screens spreading hate and false rumours, I want to say that while you are sitting behind, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard, and delivering the best show in the world. While you hide, we are exploring the streets of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, talking with fans, engaging with people, and ensuring everyone’s safety. While you divide, we unite.”
He thanked the host nations for creating a warm environment during the games but reiterated his disappointment toward critics who, in his view, focused on negativity instead of celebration.
“While they celebrated, you were busy planting seeds of hate. Our world needs love, not hate; tolerance, not division; celebration, not mourning. While you spread hatred, we worked tirelessly to unite two countries at war. Iran entered the United States without incident or conflict.”
Infantino emphasized that football is about bringing people together, not politics or division.
“It’s not about politics. Football is about unity, not division. Football is bigger than hate and discrimination.”
He also addressed controversial referee decisions during the tournament, suggesting that such rulings are common in major leagues worldwide and pointing out the irony of criticism from countries that use similar practices.
“Indeed, arguable referees decisions or strange disciplinary rulings such as for instance potentially mistaken red or yellow cards or subsequent decisions not to ban players in certain situations are routine and widely accepted in some of the biggest leagues worldwide. It’s curious that the same countries employing these practices are the ones criticising.”
Infantino concluded his message with a simple note of goodwill: “Much love to all.”
Reflections on a Mixed Reception
The tone of Infantino’s statement contrasts with the overall success many saw in the 2026 World Cup. Though there were criticisms—ranging from political issues tied to the United States’ immigration policies and President Donald Trump’s involvement, to disputes over disciplinary decisions, particularly regarding USMNT forward Folarin Balogun—the event had many positive moments.
Videos showing fans from opposing teams warmly embracing and celebrating together stood out as highlights. The tournament also attracted record viewership in the United States once the matches kicked off.
We think these moments offered plenty of reasons for celebration. Yet, Infantino’s focus on the detractors and controversy suggests he chose to confront the negatives head-on instead.
