Van Hecke Demands Clarity as Chelsea and Liverpool Monitor Situation
Jan Paul van Hecke has cut through the transfer noise with one word: clarity.
The Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back, now firmly established as one of the Premier League’s most assured ball-playing defenders, wants his future resolved quickly as Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham circle ahead of a pivotal summer.
At 26, with 12 months left on his Brighton deal and 131 appearances already behind him, Van Hecke sits at the heart of one of the window’s most intriguing defensive sagas. The Telegraph value him at around €81 million (£70m), and the list of admirers tells its own story.
Chelsea like him. Liverpool like him. Tottenham more than like him – they’ve already tested Brighton’s resolve and been rebuffed.
For now, Van Hecke is on World Cup duty with the Netherlands, having started their 2-2 draw with Japan in their opening fixture on Sunday. The backdrop, though, is unmistakably club-shaped.
“Of course, things are also happening and I know that myself too, but that’s not for now, that’s more after the World Cup,” he said, in comments carried by Sky Sports. “I will then see where I play. I have also said very clearly that I would like to have clarity for myself before the World Cup.
“And I have that too, but then for now, for myself, it’s just clear, I just want to play the World Cup as well as possible. That clarity will probably come after the World Cup when I make that step, then it’s clear to everyone.”
He is not hiding from the decision. He is parking it.
Brighton, though, are in no mood to be rushed.
Brighton stand firm as bids arrive
Inside the Amex boardroom, the message is blunt: Van Hecke goes only on Brighton’s terms.
Tottenham have already discovered that the hard way. Roberto De Zerbi’s old club have knocked back two bids from Spurs, both undisclosed, and are prepared to hold the line despite the ticking contract clock.
Brighton CEO Paul Barber spelt out the stance in an interview with talkSPORT.
“Yes, we have rejected a bid from Tottenham over the last week or so, in fact, two bids,” he said. “From that point of view, it has to be right for us as well as the player.
“We have to be in a position to make the best trades to suit our model and also to make sure that we're supporting Fabian [Hurzeler], because he's got another big season ahead of him.”
That is the crux. Brighton’s recruitment-and-sale machine is admired across Europe, but it only works when the timing suits them. Van Hecke might be edging towards the final year of his deal, yet there is no hint of panic. They have rejected Spurs, they know Chelsea and Liverpool are watching, and they are content to let the market come to them.
For Chelsea, who continue to reshape their defensive options, the situation is familiar: a top-level Premier League defender, big fee, strong competition. The question is whether they move decisively once the World Cup dust settles and Van Hecke is ready to “make that step” he openly acknowledges.
Cucurella set for Bernabéu switch
While Van Hecke’s next move waits, one Chelsea defender is already halfway out of the door.
Marc Cucurella is poised to join Real Madrid, with The Athletic reporting that the Spanish giants will pay €60m (£51.8m) to take the left-back to the Bernabéu. He is expected to become José Mourinho’s third signing of the summer, following Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries.
It would mark a significant exit from Stamford Bridge and a sharp change of scenery for a player who had publicly questioned the club’s direction earlier in the year.
Before Xabi Alonso’s arrival in May, Cucurella spoke candidly to The Athletic about the impact of Enzo Maresca’s sacking in January.
“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision,” he said.
“To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season…”
Those comments painted a picture of a dressing room searching for stability. His move to Madrid, if completed as expected, would close that chapter and hand Chelsea a sizeable fee as they retool again.
And that loops the story back to Van Hecke. With Cucurella heading for La Liga, Chelsea’s need for defensive reinforcements only sharpens. Brighton are immovable for now. The player wants clarity after the World Cup. The clubs want a bargain that Brighton will not entertain.
Someone will blink. The only question is who, and when.
