Meslier's Controversial Move to Arsenal: Ambition or Comfort?
Arsenal wanted cover. Andy Stack sees a career going soft.
The former Gunners goalkeeper has torn into Illan Meslier’s decision to accept a third-choice role at the Emirates, arguing the 26-year-old has traded ambition for comfort after leaving Leeds United on a free.
Meslier, who spent six years at Elland Road and racked up 215 appearances for Leeds, arrived in north London this summer to sit behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. On paper, it’s depth and experience for the reigning Premier League champions. To Stack, it’s a step that makes no competitive sense.
“I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” Stack told Metro, clearly baffled by the Frenchman’s choice. “He’s got Premier League experience, he’s played countless games in the Premier League, he’s got bundles of experience, been at Leeds for I don’t know how many years.
“He’s played loads of games, and maybe he doesn’t have that burning desire to go and play games and put himself under pressure. Maybe that’s what he’s after.
“But I’m just surprised with someone of Meslier’s quality that he’s decided to almost chuck the towel in and be a number three.”
Arsenal’s academy in the firing line
Stack’s criticism doesn’t stop with Meslier. For him, the deal shines an uncomfortable light on Arsenal’s goalkeeping production line.
Meslier’s arrival has already nudged 20-year-old Tommy Setford towards the exit door, at least temporarily, with the youngster expected to leave on loan in search of regular football. To a former academy product like Stack, that cuts deep.
“Look, he’s experienced, but it’s highly unlikely that you would use him,” he said of Meslier’s role. “My question is, is there not another goalkeeper at Arsenal Football Club that’s capable of that?
“What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies. At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.”
In Stack’s eyes, a third-choice spot should be the gateway for a homegrown keeper, not a parking space for an established Premier League name.
Meslier’s stance: ‘I’ve just joined the champions’
Meslier, though, is all in on the move. After a bruising final year at Leeds under Daniel Farke, where he was frozen out following a spell that had already included both promotion highs and relegation scars, the Frenchman sees Arsenal as a reset at the very top of the English game.
He has already pulled on the shirt, making his debut in a pre-season friendly against Girona earlier this month, and speaks about the transfer as a peak, not a compromise.
“I’m extremely happy. It's a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I'm very happy and very proud to join Arsenal,” he told the club’s official website.
“I cannot wait to show the love that I've got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”
Where Stack sees a goalkeeper stepping away from the firing line, Meslier sees a chance to chase medals and attach his name to a winning era, even if it means starting from the back of the queue.
Title talk: ‘Arsenal will win it’
If Stack is unconvinced by the goalkeeping strategy, he has no such doubts about the bigger picture. For him, Arsenal’s summer business has turned them into clear favourites to retain their Premier League crown.
The Gunners have gone heavy again, with Bruno Guimaraes arriving as the headline signing, backed up by defensive recruit Piero Hincapie and attacking option Christos Tzolis. To Stack, that level of investment on top of a title-winning squad shifts the landscape.
“Absolutely, Arsenal will win it,” he predicted. “I think Arsenal will be buzzing after last year, and think it’s a situation now where it’s basically the monkey off their back.
“They will be going into the season absolutely buzzing, and with the signing of Guimaraes and probably more to come between now and the start of the season, I think they will definitely strengthen.
“I fancy Arsenal to go and win it, but I think that it will be a close-run race with Man City, I think City will be close behind them.”
So Arsenal march into the new season with a squad stacked for a title defence, a marquee midfield addition, and a third-choice goalkeeper signing that has split opinion. If Meslier ends up with a medal around his neck come May, the debate over hunger and hierarchy will only get louder.
