Sheffield Wednesday Signs Liverpool Winger Kieran Morrison on Loan
Sheffield Wednesday have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the season-long loan capture of highly rated Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison.
The 19-year-old, a Northern Ireland international who prefers the right flank, arrives at Hillsborough on the back of a breakout year in Liverpool’s academy and his first steps in senior football.
Rising talent leaves Anfield for game time
Morrison made his Liverpool first-team debut in October, coming on in the Carabao Cup last-16 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. He featured again off the bench in March during the FA Cup win at Wolves, a sign of how highly he is regarded inside the club.
Born in Manchester but capped by Northern Ireland, he lit up Premier League 2 last season. Fifteen goals and seven assists for Liverpool’s Under-21s earned him a place on the shortlist for the Premier League 2 Player of the Year award, a marker of his impact at that level.
Liverpool tied him down to a new four-year contract in May. A month later, his progress was rewarded on the international stage as he made his senior debut for Northern Ireland in their friendly victory over Guinea in June.
“The rebuild is now” – Morrison buys into Owls project
Speaking to the Owls’ website, Morrison made it clear why he chose Wednesday.
"It's a massive club with great history and even better fans. Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it," he said, underlining his desire to grow with a team aiming upwards.
"It's a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible.
"I want to show the fans, the gaffer and everyone why the gaffer wanted to sign me and why I belong here."
The winger’s direct running and eye for goal fit neatly with Wednesday’s push to inject more pace and threat into their front line.
Wednesday see “huge potential” in Liverpool flyer
Owls sporting director Simon Wilson did not hide his excitement at landing the teenager.
"Kieran is a player with huge potential," Wilson said. "During his time with us, he will benefit from playing in front of huge crowds in a high intensity pressing team that wants to play and run forward, just like he is being asked at Liverpool.
"Equally, we hope to get the value of his quality in his time with us and send him back a better player and a better person.
"It was the shortest player call we have ever had – Kieran's enthusiasm for coming here was extremely strong and he cannot wait to get started."
That enthusiasm will not have to wait long for an outlet. Morrison is available for selection for Thursday’s League One fixture at home to Bradford City, and Hillsborough may get its first look at a winger arriving with momentum, confidence and something to prove.
