João Cancelo Signs Permanent Deal with Barcelona Until 2029

Barcelona have finally got their man.

The club confirmed on its official X account that João Cancelo has signed a three-year deal, tying the Portuguese full-back to the Blaugrana until 2029 and closing a transfer saga that has rumbled on all summer.

This is Cancelo’s third arrival in Barcelona colours, but the first time he comes as a permanent signing. He first landed at the club on loan from Manchester City for the 2023-24 campaign, then returned on another temporary deal from Al-Hilal for the second half of last season. Now, there are no clauses or return tickets attached. He is theirs.

Reports had indicated that Cancelo’s path to Catalonia hinged on a clean break with Al-Hilal. The defender is understood to have agreed to terminate his contract with the Saudi club, waiving what remained of his financial dues to secure a free transfer and clear the way for Barcelona to move.

Over a season and a half in Catalonia, Cancelo has already left a clear imprint. He has featured in 65 matches across all competitions, scored six goals and delivered nine assists. His versatility on either flank and his ability to step into midfield have become a key part of Barcelona’s structure, and he capped last season by lifting the La Liga title with the team.

His time at Al-Hilal, by contrast, never truly settled. Cancelo joined the Saudi side in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons on their books, but played only one of them after being cut from the domestic squad last term. Across 45 appearances in all competitions, he scored three goals and set up 14 more, yet left without a single trophy to show for that stint.

Barcelona's Summer Rebuild

Barcelona’s summer rebuild is gathering real weight. Cancelo is the club’s fifth signing of the window, slotting in after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon from England, Karim Adeyemi from Germany, Spain’s Rodri and Belgian talent Jesse Bisiou. The club have also activated a purchase option for promising Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.

With Cancelo now locked in until 2029, Barcelona have turned a short-term solution into a long-term pillar on the flank — and raised expectations for what this reshaped side must deliver in the seasons ahead.
