Milan's Ambitious Pursuit of Ruben Dias: Challenges Ahead
Milan’s hunt for a new central defender has taken a bold turn, with Manchester City’s Ruben Dias emerging as a high-profile name on their list.
Ruben Amorim has made it clear since arriving that he wants to reinforce the back line, and the club’s work with super-agent Jorge Mendes this summer has opened an intriguing door. Mendes, who has been in Milan for talks on several fronts, also represents Dias. From those conversations, the idea of testing City’s resolve over the Portugal international has taken shape.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, initial contacts over a potential deal have already taken place, understood to be with Mendes rather than directly with City at this stage. Dias, 29, is believed to be on the market, and his profile ticks several boxes for the Rossoneri: proven at the highest level, entering what should be his peak years, and potentially available at a lower cost than in previous windows.
Milan also sense an opening. Dias’ last two seasons have been disrupted by injuries, and his status in the transfer market is not as untouchable as it once was. The club see a chance to capitalise on that dip in stock to bring in a leader for their defence.
Yet the dream quickly collides with reality.
The deal is described as highly complicated. City have already lost Rodri this summer and are deeply reluctant to part with another cornerstone of their spine. Any negotiation would start from a position of resistance in Manchester, not encouragement.
Then comes the financial wall. Even with his value slightly reduced, Dias would command a huge fee and a salary at the very top of Milan’s wage structure. For a club that has tried to balance ambition with sustainability, assembling a package to satisfy both City and the player looks extremely difficult.
The logic behind the link is clear: a new coach pushing for a defensive upgrade, a powerful agent tying the parties together, and a world-class centre-back whose situation is no longer completely closed. For now, though, Ruben Dias to Milan remains more of an audacious idea than an imminent reality, and the Rossoneri may yet have to look elsewhere to fix the heart of their defence.
