Manchester City’s Pursuit of Enzo Fernández: Chelsea's Stance
Manchester City’s interest in Enzo Fernández hasn’t gone away. It has just hit a wall of Chelsea’s making.
Rodri’s completed move from City to Barcelona has dragged the story back into the spotlight and left the Premier League champions hunting for at least one elite midfielder. According to reporter Ben Jacobs, Enzo remains high on their list and City are “prepared to bid” for the Argentina international before the window closes.
That is only half the battle.
Chelsea have been clear all summer: Fernández is not a player they are pushing towards the exit. A £120m asking price has hovered over every conversation, and even that figure has not truly invited negotiations. The Blues even floated a “deadline” for offers last Friday, a line in the sand designed to give them time to react if anyone met their demands.
City did not bite. The deadline passed. The interest stayed.
Now the equation has shifted again. Any move at this stage would leave Chelsea short in midfield with very little time to find a replacement. If they sell, they are the ones forced into the market late, they are the ones likely to overpay. They know it – and they will want City to pay for that risk up front.
So while City might be ready to test Chelsea’s resolve, the price is only going one way. The £120m that cooled talks earlier in the window may no longer be enough to even start a serious conversation.
What happens next? Either City walk away and spread their money across other midfield targets, or they decide that replacing Rodri with a World Cup winner is worth detonating one of the biggest deals of the summer.
If they choose the latter, the final days of this window could explode.
