NorthEast United Signs India Defender Pramveer Singh
NorthEast United FC have pulled off one of the most eye-catching domestic moves of the upcoming Indian Super League season, beating several rivals to the signature of highly rated India international defender Pramveer Singh.
The 18-year-old centre-back, out of contract after the 2025-26 campaign with Punjab FC, has chosen the Highlanders despite strong interest from multiple ISL clubs. The deal, agreed on a three-year contract, is expected to be completed once the final paperwork is signed.
For a teenager in demand, the choice came down to something simple: minutes, not money.
A source involved in the negotiations told Khel Now that three ISL sides were in the running, but NorthEast United’s promise of regular game time proved decisive. Bigger contracts were on the table elsewhere. The clearer pathway was in Guwahati.
A meteoric rise through India’s ranks
Pramveer’s climb through Indian football has been rapid and relentless.
In just three years, he has ticked off almost every age-group box available. U-17. U-20. U-23. And now, the senior national team.
He first caught wider attention at the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, where his left-footed composure at the back marked him out as one to watch. From there, he progressed through Punjab FC’s academy and into the Indian Youth League, steadily tightening his grip on the spotlight.
His momentum only grew. In 2024, he played every minute of Punjab’s triumphant Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) campaign, anchoring a defence that carried the club to the title. That consistency forced the next step: a promotion to the senior squad.
The ISL record books soon felt his impact. Lining up against Mohun Bagan, Pramveer started at just 17 years and 189 days old, becoming the youngest starter in ISL history. It was not a ceremonial debut either. He stayed in the side’s plans, featuring in 13 matches across all competitions in the 2025-26 season and even chipping in with a goal.
On the international stage, his stock kept rising. With India U-23s, he worked closely under Naushad Moosa, now assistant coach at NorthEast United. The team narrowly missed out on qualification for the AFC U-23 Asian Cup, but Pramveer’s assured displays in defence stood out. Those performances helped pave the way to his senior India debut earlier this month against Tajikistan, where he became the latest youth product to break into the Blue Tigers setup.
For a defender still in his teens, that is an unusually full résumé.
Why NorthEast United moved fast
Inside NorthEast United, interest in Pramveer had been building for months. The club identified him not just as a short-term signing, but as a cornerstone for the future.
Head coach Juan Pedro Benali has made youth development a pillar of his project in Guwahati. The Highlanders have invested heavily in emerging Indian talent, trusting that a strong core of domestic players can reshape the club’s trajectory. In that context, an 18-year-old left-footed centre-back with senior India experience is more than a signing. He is a statement.
The presence of Moosa on the coaching staff adds another layer. Having already worked with Pramveer at U-23 level, he knows the defender’s strengths, temperament, and areas for growth. That familiarity should smooth the transition and speed up his integration into Benali’s system.
For NorthEast United, the calculation is clear: give him games, refine his raw qualities, and watch his value — sporting and financial — soar.
For Pramveer, the logic is just as straightforward. After climbing through every age-group rung in Indian football, he now needs a club willing to trust him with responsibility, not just potential. NorthEast United have put that trust in writing.
The Highlanders have taken their shot on one of the country’s brightest defensive prospects. If the trajectory holds, they may have just secured the spine of their backline for years to come.
