Djed Spence Set for Move to Inter Milan

Djed Spence’s future is edging away from north London – and towards the San Siro.

The Tottenham full-back, once tipped as a potential target for Premier League rivals, is now firmly focused on a move to Inter Milan, with the Italian champions pushing to get a deal over the line.

“Spence is a better player than Gomez”

Spence’s talent has never been in doubt. One prominent voice close to his development even went as far as to say: “Now he would be a player of interest. If it’d be Liverpool then I’d want big money for him. I would want a lot of money for him. They took the boy Joe Gomez, who was a South London boy, but Spence is a better player than him.”

That kind of comparison underlines the level some believe Spence can reach. But his next step looks set to come not at Anfield, nor across north London, but in Serie A.

Inter step up, Arsenal stay away

Arsenal have not moved. Mikel Arteta’s side have shown no real appetite to strengthen in the wide defensive areas this summer, and any suggestion of a late swoop for Spence would be exactly that – a shock.

Inter, by contrast, have acted.

The Italian club have opened talks with Tottenham over a permanent transfer, and Spence is understood to be keen on the switch. Earlier in the window, the two clubs were some distance apart on valuation, which stalled progress and left the player’s future hanging in the balance.

Now the gap is closing.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are closing in on an agreement, with a deal expected to land at around €30 million (£25m) plus bonuses. That figure sits below what Tottenham had long hoped to recoup for the Englishman, but the player’s desire to join Inter appears to be softening Spurs’ stance.

North London exit, Italian opportunity

Tottenham wanted more. The market, and Spence’s determination to move, are dragging the price back towards Inter’s side of the table.

Right now, any club other than Inter prising Spence away from Spurs looks unlikely. Arsenal would need a dramatic change of plan and conditions to even enter the conversation, and even then, a move across the north London divide still feels remote.

All roads point to Milan. The only real question left is how quickly Tottenham and Inter can turn months of interest into a signature on the page.
