Ferran Torres Set for PSG Move Amid Barcelona's Dilemma
Barcelona are closing in on the sale of Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain, with the French giants ready to pay around €55 million for the Spain striker in a deal expected to be completed this week.
If it goes through, it ends a turbulent four-and-a-half-year spell in Catalonia for a player who never stopped dividing opinion.
From slow starter to Flick favourite
Signed from Manchester City in January 2022, Torres arrived with a big reputation and an even bigger price tag. The early returns underwhelmed. His numbers were modest, his role unclear, and he drifted between positions without ever quite convincing as a winger or a false nine.
That changed under Hansi Flick.
Once the German coach locked him in as a full-time striker, Torres finally found rhythm and relevance. Across the last two seasons he hit 40 goals, shedding the “inconsistent” label and turning into one of Barça’s most reliable finishers in the final third.
The transformation did not erase the debate around him, but it did change its tone. The question was no longer whether he belonged at this level, but whether Barcelona could afford to build around him — or afford to let him go.
World champion, lone No. 9… and on his way out?
Torres heads toward the exit as a World Cup hero. He scored Spain’s winning goal at this summer’s tournament, the defining moment of his international career so far and a reminder of his knack for decisive contributions on the biggest stages.
Right now, he is also the only senior striker in Barcelona’s squad.
That reality makes the timing of the proposed sale even more striking. Barça remain fixated on their “dream” target, Julián Álvarez, but the Manchester City forward is still out of reach for the moment. Until that changes, the centre-forward department is essentially Ferran… and then a void.
So Barcelona stand on a knife-edge: cash in on a player whose value is high and whose form has finally stabilized, or hold tight and risk missing out on a major fee in the hope that a marquee replacement eventually walks through the door.
A €55 million gamble
For PSG, the move is clear: sign a World Cup-winning, 24-year-old striker entering his prime, fresh off back-to-back productive seasons, and add him to a squad already built to dominate Europe.
For Barcelona, the calculation cuts deeper.
€55 million offers financial breathing space and flexibility in the market. But it also removes a proven scorer, a player who has already adapted to the club, the league, and the pressure, at a time when genuine No. 9s are scarce and expensive.
