Julian Alvarez's Atletico Future Takes New Twist After Talks with Simeone
Julian Alvarez’s transfer saga has taken another sharp turn, with the Argentine forward holding a direct, face-to-face conversation with Diego Simeone just as Barcelona continue to circle.
According to Pedro Fullana, Alvarez met his manager before Wednesday’s training session and laid out his stance amid the growing uncertainty over his future. No intermediaries. No distance. Just player and coach, spelling out where each stands.
Alvarez has been at the heart of one of the summer’s biggest stories after making clear he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, with Barcelona emerging as his preferred destination. That desire has not gone away.
Simeone’s position has not shifted either. He does not want to lose him.
Alvarez back in the group – but not in the clear
The striker returned to full first-team training on Wednesday, rejoining the main Atletico group after medical checks and an individual session on Tuesday. It was his first complete session with the Rojiblancos since his involvement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Before a ball was kicked, the two Argentines spoke. Alvarez explained his situation directly to Simeone, who, from the club’s side, is still pushing for him to stay and remain a central piece of his squad.
From Alvarez’s side, the message remains different. He sees his future elsewhere, and Barcelona are understood to be the destination he wants.
So he trains in Madrid. He dreams of Barcelona. And Simeone stands in the middle, determined not to let one of his most important players walk away.
Barcelona push, Atletico dig in
Barcelona have long been the only club seriously pushing for Alvarez. They are not hiding their interest. Atletico, though, have been just as clear in their refusal to even open the door.
The club’s stance has been reinforced at the very top. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has publicly backed the hard line: Alvarez is under contract until 2030 and protected by a €500 million release clause.
Those numbers hand Atletico enormous leverage. Barcelona can want him. Alvarez can want Barcelona. But the contract gives Atletico control.
Complicating everything is the tension between the two clubs. Barcelona’s contacts with Alvarez’s camp while he remained under contract at Atletico triggered an extraordinary disciplinary procedure from the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, a rare and serious step that underlines how strained the relationship has become.
Even so, Barcelona have not walked away. They continue to monitor, to wait, to hope for a crack in Atletico’s position.
Right now, that crack does not exist. Without a major shift – either in Atletico’s stance or in the broader dynamics of the deal – Alvarez’s dream move looks locked behind a clause, a contract, and a coach who still refuses to let him go.
