Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits Wall with Joaquin Seys
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has hit a brick wall, with Club Brugge shutting the door on any move for highly rated defender Joaquin Seys.
United want to strengthen Michael Carrick’s options on the left before the window closes, but Seys – one of Europe’s emerging full-backs – is off limits. Reports in Belgium say Brugge have made it clear the 21-year-old will not be sold this summer and are ready to turn down what would be a record bid for the club.
Seys is central to their plans. He has started all three of Brugge’s games this season after a standout campaign last year, when he racked up 55 appearances, scored five goals and supplied eight assists. With those numbers and that level of involvement, Brugge see him as untouchable.
United have not yet tested that stance with a formal offer. Even so, the message from Brugge is blunt: don’t bother. Even a proposal matching the £34 million Arsenal paid earlier in the summer for Christos Tzolis would not shift their position.
It is not just United being turned away. Seys has attracted interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Benfica and Porto, but all suitors look set to be frustrated, at least for now. With three years left on his contract, Brugge hold all the cards and intend to play them.
That hardline approach comes despite previous comments from boss Ivan Leko, who has openly acknowledged the difficulty of rejecting huge bids.
“If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no. The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season,” Leko said, stressing that timing is everything for his young stars. “The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.”
For United, the timing is far from ideal. Carrick’s left-back pool looks thin. Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract, and Patrick Dorgu is now viewed as a more advanced option rather than a traditional full-back. The need is clear; the market is not cooperating.
Seys is the second target United have found effectively “not for sale” in this window. Newcastle have already knocked back their attempts to sign Lewis Hall, closing off another avenue on that flank.
Attention may now turn more seriously to Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. The 19-year-old is seen as a more realistic option, with a release clause written into his contract that gives United a clear route if they decide to move.
United still want a left-back. The clock is ticking. And with Seys locked in at Brugge, the club’s recruitment team will have to look elsewhere for a solution.
