Galatasaray's Bold Move for Bruno Fernandes
Galatasaray are preparing one of the boldest moves of the summer – a double-pronged attempt to prise Bruno Fernandes away from Manchester United with big money and an even bigger contract.
The Turkish champions, fresh from reclaiming domestic dominance, have set their sights on United’s captain and creative heartbeat. According to reports from The Telegraph and Ben Jacobs, Galatasaray are ready to table a €50m (£42.8m) offer to United and back it up with a four-year deal that would transform Fernandes’ earnings.
Galatasaray’s blockbuster proposal
At the heart of the plan is Dursun Özbek. The Galatasaray president is described as “determined” to land Fernandes and is prepared to put serious numbers on the table to make it happen.
The offer on the player’s side is eye-catching: a four-year contract worth €21m (£18.3m) net per season, plus a €4m signing-on bonus. Thanks to Turkey’s favourable tax regime, that package would effectively double Fernandes’ current take-home pay at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old is in the final 12 months of his existing United deal, believed to be worth about £200,000 a week, though the club hold an option to extend it by a further year. A previous £57m release clause has expired, but the lack of a new long-term agreement has inevitably drawn attention from ambitious clubs sensing an opportunity.
Galatasaray, buoyed by their title and keen to add a genuine marquee name, see this as their moment.
United’s stance: not for sale
There is one major problem for the Istanbul giants: Manchester United are not playing ball.
The Telegraph, BBC Sport and Jacobs are all aligned on this point – United have no intention of selling Bruno Fernandes this summer, regardless of the size of the bid. Club officials view the Portugal international as central to Michael Carrick’s plans and a cornerstone of the rebuild.
The strategy is clear: keep Fernandes, build around him, and avoid another destabilising saga around a key figure. Internally, United still see him as a crucial leader on and off the pitch, not a saleable asset to cash in on with a year left.
TEAMtalk reported last week that United had effectively closed the door on an exit, despite the growing queue of admirers. Galatasaray’s interest only lengthens that line.
Fernandes’ priorities
For all the money on offer, the player’s own stance currently aligns with his club.
BBC Sport report that Fernandes’ priority is to remain at Old Trafford. He is said to be fiercely loyal to United and focused on adding more major honours in the Premier League and Champions League before considering a final, more lucrative move later in his career.
Saudi Pro League sides have already tested that resolve. Al-Hilal pushed hard last summer with what were described as colossal financial terms, but Fernandes turned them down to stay in Manchester and chase trophies rather than immediate riches.
The idea of one last big contract in a higher-paying league is not off the table for the future, particularly with an eye on securing his family’s long-term situation. For now, though, he believes he still has plenty to offer at the very top level in England and Europe.
So Galatasaray can assemble their package, sharpen their numbers and make their pitch. United can dig in. Fernandes can weigh loyalty against legacy and financial security.
The window will reveal one thing: just how far a Turkish giant is willing to go to test the resolve of a captain who insists his story at Old Trafford is not finished yet.
