Liverpool Duo Set to Clash in World Cup Final After England's Late Defeat to Argentina

England's hopes ended in a 2-1 loss to Argentina, with the match slipping away in the final moments in Atlanta. For most of the game, England seemed poised to reach their first men's World Cup final since 1966. Then everything changed.

Anthony Gordon gave England the lead ten minutes into the second half, capitalizing on a tough, physical match with a goal that should have sealed their spot in the final. England appeared organized and close to victory. Yet after that, they lost control, stopped maintaining possession, and invited relentless pressure from Argentina.

Argentina Capitalizes on England's Mistakes

Argentina pushed aggressively down the wings, and England failed to contain them. Enzo Fernandez equalized with a stunning strike five minutes from time, reflecting the shift in momentum. In stoppage time, Lautaro Martinez scored the winner. Despite the chaotic finish, the goals counted. England went from leading to losing within minutes.

"We’re disappointed, we were so close but we got too passive after we scored and conceded a lot of chances," admitted England coach Thomas Tuchel. "We couldn’t turn the ball possession around and then conceded so many crosses, chances and shots. We were close but couldn’t keep the level up after we scored."

Tuchel explained his tactical adjustments: "After we scored, without substitutions, we conceded too many crosses, so we switched to a back five to close the gaps inside and be stronger in the air. The responsibility is on me, and if it doesn’t go well, it’s easy to say it was wrong."

What's Next for England and Argentina?

England will now face France in the third-place match, while Argentina advances to the final against Spain. The final will feature a notable Liverpool connection, with new signing Victor Munoz likely to face off against Alexis Mac Allister, who played a key role in Argentina’s journey to back-to-back finals.
