Jurrien Timber's Return: A Key Decision for Arsenal Ahead of Champions League Final

Jurrien Timber’s return to full training has arrived at the perfect – and most brutal – moment of Arsenal’s season, dropping a major selection dilemma on Mikel Arteta’s desk just days before the Champions League final.

The Dutch defender, out since mid-March, has come through his first full session back with the squad, according to Miguel Delaney of the Independent, and is now pushing to be involved against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday. For a player who has spent weeks working alone, this was the step everyone at Arsenal had been waiting for. He trained with the group on Wednesday and suffered no adverse reaction.

That changes the conversation.

Arteta suddenly has a live option where, a week ago, there was only a question mark. Timber is viewed as a potentially decisive weapon, even if he can only manage 30 minutes. In a final of this magnitude, half an hour from a defender of his composure and versatility can tilt the balance.

For now, there is no guarantee he even makes the bench. Football Insider Hand of Arsenal report that the final call on Timber’s inclusion will come after Thursday’s session, with the staff refusing to rush a verdict. Arsenal want one more look at his sharpness under match-intensity drills before they commit.

The clues, though, are starting to line up.

On Wednesday, the Netherlands named Timber in their squad for the 2026 World Cup. The tournament is still some way off, but the decision is significant. Ronald Koeman had previously cast doubt on the defender’s ability to be ready in time; now he clearly believes Timber is on track to contribute when the competition kicks off on June 11th, with the Dutch opening their campaign on June 14th.

National team managers do not hand out World Cup places to players they think are miles off it. Koeman’s change of stance underlines what Arsenal are seeing at London Colney: Timber is back in contention.

The question is not whether he is fit. It is whether he is Champions League final fit.

Timber has not played a competitive minute since the middle of March. Dropping straight into a game of this magnitude, with the pace and pressure of a final against PSG, is a different universe to controlled training sessions. Arteta knows it. A miscalculation here is unforgiving.

That is why, as it stands, Cristhian Mosquera remains the favourite to start. The young defender has carried the load in Timber’s absence and is expected to keep his place in the XI, with Arsenal reluctant to disrupt a settled back line from the opening whistle.

From there, the match itself will write Timber’s script.

If Arsenal control the game and manage the tempo, Arteta can afford to be conservative, perhaps keeping Timber as an emergency option only. If the contest becomes stretched, if PSG’s forwards begin to find gaps or the Gunners need a fresh outlet from the back, the temptation to turn to the returning Dutchman will grow.

One more training session, one more medical briefing, one more decision that could shape a European final. Timber has done his part to be ready.

Now Arteta must decide how much risk is worth the possible reward.
