Arsenal Close in on Liverpool's Young Forward Vincent Joseph
Arsenal are closing in on a deal to prise one of Liverpool’s most highly rated young forwards out of Anfield.
According to The Athletic, the Premier League champions have reached an agreement with England youth international Vincent Joseph, with only a compensation fee between the clubs left to resolve. Joseph, 16, is set on a move to north London; now the lawyers and negotiators take over.
Arsenal raid Liverpool’s academy
This is not a first-team blockbuster, but it is a statement. Arsenal, fresh from lifting the Premier League title, are not just strengthening Mikel Arteta’s senior squad. They are digging deep into the youth market, looking for the next wave to sustain their rise.
That search has led them directly into Liverpool’s academy.
Joseph, a prolific striker at youth level, has already made his mark on the international stage. He has scored eight goals in nine games for England’s under-16s and has stepped up to feature for Liverpool’s under-18s in the Premier League. Those numbers, at that age, grab attention inside recruitment departments.
He chose not to sign scholarship terms at Anfield this summer after his schoolboy registration expired. That decision opened the door. Arsenal walked through it.
Compensation battle looming
An agreement between club and player is in place. The only question now is how much Liverpool will receive.
The two clubs are negotiating a compensation fee, as is standard when a player under 24 moves before signing a first professional contract, or after one has run down. If they cannot settle it between themselves, the case will head to a tribunal.
At that point, the Professional Football Compensation Committee steps in. It will weigh Joseph’s age, his playing record, the time he has spent at Liverpool, the status of both clubs and the financial terms each side put on the table. From there, the committee will set the fee Liverpool are owed.
It is a familiar process in English football, but the stakes feel higher when the player involved is a leading prospect between two of the country’s elite sides.
Contrasting summers, same ambition
Liverpool’s own summer has been busy. Under Andoni Iraola, the Reds are trying to close the gap on Arsenal at the top of the table. They have already brought in Spanish winger Victor Munoz and French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, and are exploring a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.
While Liverpool look abroad to reinforce the first team, Arsenal are drilling down into the domestic market, building layers beneath Arteta’s senior group. Their academy recruitment has been aggressive and targeted, designed to keep the conveyor belt moving.
Now that drive has led them to Joseph, a teenager swapping the red of Liverpool for the red of Arsenal at a time when the rivalry between the two clubs is sharpening again.
If the tribunal is needed, lawyers will argue over numbers and precedents. Joseph, though, will be judged by something far simpler in the years ahead: can he turn this bold early move into a pathway towards the Emirates spotlight?
