Arsenal to Sign Liverpool Starlet Vincent Joseph
Liverpool have grown used to raiding other clubs’ academies for the best young talent in Britain. This time, it’s their turn to feel the sting.
Harvey Elliott from Fulham. Ben Doak from Celtic. Trey Nyoni from Leicester. Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea. One after another, Liverpool’s recruitment team have built a reputation for spotting teenage standouts and dragging them to Anfield before they explode.
Now Arsenal are closing in on doing exactly that to them.
Arsenal strike agreement for Vincent Joseph
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Liverpool academy striker Vincent Joseph over a move to north London, with only the fee left to be settled between the clubs.
Joseph, 16, did not sign scholarship terms with Liverpool this summer after his schoolboy registration expired, opening the door for the Gunners to move. Talks are ongoing over compensation, and if the clubs cannot agree a figure, a tribunal will step in to set the amount owed to Liverpool.
That mechanism kicks in whenever a player under 24 switches clubs before signing a first professional contract or at the end of their initial professional deal. Liverpool know the process well. They used the same route when prising Ngumoha away from Chelsea shortly after his 16th birthday, with a tribunal ultimately deciding the final fee.
This time, they are on the other side of the table.
A prolific record at youth level
Liverpool’s frustration is easy to understand. Joseph’s numbers at youth level point to a striker with serious potential.
He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, making an instant impact when given the chance at that level. On the international stage, he has eight goals in nine caps for England under-16s, including a hat-trick against the Netherlands under-16s last December, as recorded by Transfermarkt.
Those are the kind of figures that make academy staff sit up. They are also the kind that tempt rival clubs to test a teenager’s loyalty.
Liverpool lose one, Arsenal land one
At Kirkby, there will be disappointment and a sense of what might have been. Liverpool have moved quickly to tie down other prospects, offering professional terms to the likes of Lucas Clarke, but Joseph has slipped through their fingers just as he approaches the next stage of his development.
Arsenal, meanwhile, look set to add another highly rated forward to their youth ranks, mirroring the kind of opportunistic move Liverpool themselves have made so often in recent years.
The symmetry is hard to ignore. Liverpool took Ngumoha from Chelsea and accepted that a tribunal would decide the cost. Now Arsenal are preparing to lift Joseph from Merseyside under the same framework.
For Liverpool, it is a talented, prolific teenager heading to a direct domestic rival. For Arsenal, it is a calculated investment in a 16-year-old whose finishing instincts already stand out.
The fee will be argued over in boardrooms or set by tribunal. The real verdict will come years from now, when English football discovers just how high Vincent Joseph’s ceiling really is.
