According to reports from Dutch news outlet Algemeen Dagblad, Van Nistelrooy impressed the KNVB with his contributions during the 2026 World Cup, leading to the decision to keep him on board. Alongside him, goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks, who has served since early 2023, will also be retained to complete the domestic coaching core under Xavi’s leadership.

The former Barcelona manager expressed deep respect for Dutch football traditions upon his appointment. In an official statement from the KNVB, he said,
"I find it an enormous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch team. Educated at FC Barcelona with strong influences from legends like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special bond with Dutch football. You could say I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Managers such as Louis van Gaal, under whom I debuted at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard have shaped me as both player and coach. While winning remains the ultimate aim, I want to do so reflecting these values in a way people can enjoy. There is great potential and a solid foundation to build upon."
Xavi Begins a New Era as Oranje Boss
The 46-year-old’s appointment ushers in a fresh phase for the Netherlands, signing a contract through 2030 that covers Euro 2028 and the World Cup in 2030. He takes over from Ronald Koeman, who resigned after the team’s round-of-32 exit at the World Cup against Morocco. Xavi becomes the 21st foreign manager in Dutch national team history and the first since Ernst Happel led between 1977 and 1978.
