Derry City Secure 2-0 Victory Over Drogheda United

Derry City slipped back onto their new grass surface at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium and never really loosened their grip on Drogheda United in a composed 2-0 victory.

This felt like a night made for a statement. Cameron Dummigan provided it.

Dummigan lights up the new surface

Derry should have been in front inside three minutes. James Olayinka burst through midfield, his mishit shot turning into the perfect pass for Michael Duffy, only for Luke Dennison to spread himself and block at close range. It was an early warning for Drogheda. They didn’t heed it.

The home side moved the ball with confidence on the fresh grass, and on 25 minutes they carved Drogheda open again. Adam O’Reilly slid a clever pass in behind for Brandon Fleming, whose driven cross deflected kindly into Olayinka’s stride. The midfielder met it sweetly on the half-volley, side-footing from close range, but his effort crashed off the crossbar and away.

The pressure finally told three minutes later, and in some style. Dummigan, already a Goal of the Month winner in May, stepped onto the ball 25 yards out and wrapped his right foot around it. The shot curled high and unreachably into the top left corner, an unstoppable strike that drew a roar around the Brandywell and gave Derry the lead their dominance demanded.

Drogheda briefly threatened a response. Just after the half-hour, Thomas Oluwa found a yard of space inside the box and went for goal, only to see his rising effort clip the top of the bar and sail over. It was as close as they would come.

Derry almost tightened their hold before the interval. Liam Boyce threaded a neat pass into Duffy on the right, and the winger drove towards the six-yard box. His low, angled strike looked destined for the corner until Dennison flung himself to his right to turn it away.

Derry in control

The pattern barely changed after the break. Duffy, sharp and persistent all evening, nearly doubled the advantage early in the second half. Cutting in from the right side of the area, he unleashed a dipping strike that had Dennison beaten, only for the ball to drop onto the roof of the net.

Drogheda worked hard to stay in the contest, but Derry’s control in midfield, with Dummigan and O’Reilly dictating the tempo, kept the visitors penned back for long spells. When Drogheda did break, the home defence, marshalled by Connor Barr and Patrick McClean, stood firm.

There was a sour note for Derry on 82 minutes. Darragh Markey, who had come on despite carrying an Achilles issue, pulled up again and had to be replaced by Rob Slevin. With the game largely in hand, it was the one concern for Ruaidhrí Higgins on an otherwise comfortable night.

O’Reilly finishes the job

Derry still needed a second goal to reflect their superiority, and it arrived deep into stoppage time after a ruthless counter-attack. Drogheda pushed men forward, were turned over, and suddenly the Brandywell side were away.

Duffy surged clear and, instead of going alone, slid the ball across the box for O’Reilly. The midfielder arrived with perfect timing and calmly side-footed past Dennison on 93 minutes to seal the points and underline Derry’s authority.

On the club’s return to a proper grass pitch, Derry played with the assurance of a team intent on making this place a fortress again. If they keep striking the ball like Dummigan and finishing moves like O’Reilly, the Brandywell could yet become a very uncomfortable stop for anyone with ambitions of their own.
