Rangers Seen as Bigger Club Than Tottenham but Mikey Moore’s Return Remains Unlikely

Colin Hendry has told GOAL that Rangers hold the status of a bigger club than Tottenham Hotspur, yet the Scottish side faces obstacles in re-signing Mikey Moore. The young talent impressed during his loan spell at Ibrox last season, but Spurs appear set to send him elsewhere before the summer transfer window closes in 2026.

Moore's Impact at Rangers

Moore joined Rangers just before turning 18, having already made history as the youngest player to feature for Tottenham in the Premier League at 16 years and 277 days. Regarded as one of north London's top prospects, Moore found limited opportunities at Spurs due to their recent poor league performances, finishing 17th two seasons in a row.

Rangers provided valuable game time, allowing Moore to gain experience in a demanding environment. He featured in 47 matches during the 2025-26 campaign, scoring seven goals and showcasing his abilities on a bigger stage.

Uncertainty Over a Second Spell at Ibrox

Speculation has surrounded a possible return to Rangers, now managed by Derek McInnes, especially after the team began the 2026-27 season without a win in their first three games. Still, no agreement has been reached, leaving fans and the club uncertain.

Speaking with GOAL in partnership with LadBet, former Rangers defender Colin Hendry expressed his frustration over the current situation:

"It is after watching Rangers the last three games! And Derek, he's still being ably supported, we would think. Things haven't gone to plan so far. Mikey Moore would be a welcome addition. He's a player that at 19 years of age, he's gone to a different country and a bigger club - bigger club Rangers than Tottenham. I know a lot of people in England will shoot me down because of that. But when it comes to history and everything else, it's a bigger club. Is it the minute? Probably not. I can't actually say that Tottenham are a top six team, but a lot of people think that they're going to be a top eight or a top six team this season. Only last season, of course, they scraped by the skin of their teeth.

Hendry also pondered whether Moore could establish himself at Spurs again, considering his previous experiences at Rangers. He acknowledged Rangers would be pleased to bring Moore back but remained unsure if it would happen.

Potential Move to Bundesliga Suggested

The possibility of Moore gaining experience abroad continues, with a move to German side Cologne under discussion. Hendry supports this idea, noting that clubs can only offer options to young players rather than guarantee playing time.

"Yes, I'm with that as well. But then again, the club can't dictate. They can only maybe give options to players, the younger players, especially if they're not right away going to be considered to play in the first team. And the thing about that as well is that, even when I played, every young player thinks they're capable of playing in the first team. And he may for a game or two, he may even be able to.

"But again, it's up to the powers that be at Tottenham, and the coaches and everything else, and what squad they've got, who they've got in that position, what sort of qualities that player's got over that player in that position. There's all these different considerations to take into consideration, and it's not a bad situation for Mikey Moore.

"Where's he going off to? Italy or Spain? Germany? What an experience that would be. In Germany, of course, we all know how much crowds they get in Germany and how well supported the Bundesliga is.

"Bayern Munich are pretty much out in front on their own at the minute. I don't think there's anything to touch them. It'd be great for Rangers to get him back, but I think that's probably highly unlikely."

Transfer Deadlines and Future Moves

The transfer window in Scotland remains open until September 3, giving McInnes some time to bring new players to Rangers. Meanwhile, England's window closes earlier, so Tottenham is expected to decide Moore’s future soon as they wrap up pre-season and prepare for the Premier League start.
