Barcelona's Interest in Dumfries Amid Kounde's Uncertain Future

The season is barely in the rear-view mirror, but at Barcelona the rebuild has already started. The headline search is for a centre-forward, yet inside the sporting department there is a clear understanding: the right flank could define the summer.

Questions over Jules Kounde’s long-term role at right-back have pushed the position back onto the agenda. And with that, a familiar name has resurfaced.

Dumfries back in the frame

According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, Denzel Dumfries has re-emerged as a concrete option for Barcelona.

The Inter Milan defender is expected to be on the move in the coming months, with his camp already testing the market among Europe’s elite. The Dutch international is open to a new challenge, and his new representatives have wasted no time.

Meetings have already taken place with Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that tracked him in previous windows. Ali Barat, now in charge of Dumfries’ interests, sat down with Deco a few days ago to outline the player’s situation and availability.

For now, Barcelona are keeping their powder dry. Any serious push for Dumfries is on hold until they know who is leaving.

Inside the club, there is no illusion: a deal for Dumfries would be tied directly to a major outgoing involving Kounde.

Kounde at the crossroads

Barcelona are prepared to listen to offers for the French defender. That stance has been communicated internally, and there is a sense that his case could trigger a chain reaction in the market.

Kounde’s versatility has been invaluable, but it has also complicated his role. As the club weighs up how to reshape the back line, his future has become one of the key variables of the summer.

Multiple scenarios are on the table. A big sale could open room for both financial manoeuvre and a different profile at right-back. No sale, and Dumfries almost certainly stays out of reach.

A €25 million window of opportunity

The timing around Dumfries is very specific.

The Inter full-back has a €25 million release clause that activates in July and stays valid for just one month. Any club wanting to trigger it must move quickly and decisively inside that narrow window.

Twelve months ago, Jorge Mendes, then representing Dumfries, pushed hard to get him to Barcelona. The operation stalled against the club’s salary cap and financial limits. The interest never completely disappeared, but the numbers simply did not work.

They might still not, unless Barcelona execute a bold outgoing plan.

Dumfries’ wages are considered manageable within the current structure. The fee, the timing and the need to prioritise other deals complicate the picture.

Cancelo first, then the rest

For now, the board’s main focus in defence is clear: reach an agreement with Al Hilal to keep João Cancelo.

The Portuguese full-back, comfortable on both flanks, is viewed as a central piece in the puzzle. Only once his situation is resolved will Barcelona turn fully to the rest of the defensive reshuffle.

The plan is sequential. Secure Cancelo. Finalise departures. Then decide whether there is room — financially and tactically — for another specialist right-back.

Inside the club, Dumfries has strong advocates. Deco and Hansi Flick are both said to value his power, athleticism and ability to dominate wide areas. In a squad often criticised for lacking physical punch, the Dutchman offers exactly that.

The admiration alone will not be enough. For Dumfries to walk out at Montjuïc in a Barcelona shirt next season, the club must first commit to an ambitious clear-out and resolve the Kounde question.

If that domino falls, the €25 million clause in July suddenly looks less like a detail and more like a deadline.
