What Australia and Paraguay Must Do to Reach the World Cup Knockouts from Group D
As the World Cup 2026 group stage nears its end, Australia and Paraguay meet on Thursday in a crucial match. Both teams have a shot at securing automatic qualification to the knockout rounds.
Australia began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey but lost 2-0 to co-hosts USA. Paraguay, meanwhile, suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against USA but managed a 1-0 win over Turkey despite being reduced to ten men.
New Rule Changes Affect Qualification Scenarios
This year’s World Cup introduced a change in tiebreaker rules. Instead of goal difference deciding the order when points are tied, head-to-head results between teams come first.
With USA already guaranteed top spot in Group D and Turkey eliminated, attention turns to the battle between Australia and Paraguay for second place.
What Happens in the Australia vs Paraguay Match?
- If Australia or Paraguay wins: The winner reaches the knockouts directly with 6 points.
- If the match ends in a draw: Both teams finish with 4 points. Here, Australia holds the advantage because their head-to-head record and goal difference (0) surpass Paraguay’s (-2). So Australia would clinch second place, and Paraguay would wait to see if they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
The losing side in a win/loss result will have 3 points and must hope to be among the top eight third-place finishers based on points and goal difference.
How Head-to-Head Results Shape Standings
When teams tie on points, their relative position depends first on their head-to-head outcomes. If two teams are level, whoever won their direct encounter ranks higher.
For three or more teams tied on points, a mini-league is formed using only matches played among those teams. Ranking then follows points earned in these games, followed by goal difference and goals scored within that mini-league. If still unresolved, overall goal difference and goals scored across all group matches are considered.
Additional Tiebreakers If Needed
If teams remain inseparable after all above criteria, the Team Conduct Score (TCS) comes into play. This fair play rating deducts points for cards received:
- Yellow card: -1 point
- Red card from two yellows: -3 points
- Straight red card: -4 points
- Yellow plus straight red: -5 points
The team with the higher (less negative) score ranks better. If equality persists, FIFA rankings from June’s update decide who advances.
Qualifying as One of the Best Third-Placed Teams
The eight best third-placed teams across all groups move forward based on points earned. If many teams share the same points, goal difference becomes the next factor.
Usually, third-placed teams with four or more points make it through. Those with three points need an excellent goal difference to qualify.
