Roony Bardghji's ACL Tear Derails Transfer Plans
Barcelona’s plans for Roony Bardghji – and the player’s own ambitions – have been ripped up in a single training session.
The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old has torn the ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that will require surgery in the coming days and rule him out for months. Any prospect of a summer move before the September 1 deadline has vanished.
From exit talks to the worst possible news
The timing could hardly be more brutal. Bardghji was working towards a transfer after clear conversations with Barcelona’s hierarchy about his future. Coach Hansi Flick, according to ESPN, had recently told the Sweden international that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find this season and that he should look for a new club.
With that in mind, Barcelona had tried to shield him. He was intentionally left out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese to avoid exactly the kind of injury that has now struck. The idea was simple: keep him fit, keep him safe, get a deal done.
Then came Monday’s training session. One twist, one movement, and everything changed.
Medical tests later confirmed the worst: a complete ACL tear in the same right knee that betrayed him once before.
A cruel repeat of an old nightmare
This is not Bardghji’s first experience of this particular hell. He suffered the same serious injury to the same knee while at Copenhagen in 2024. For a player still only 20, two ACL ruptures on the same side is a brutal tally.
Barcelona signed him last summer from Copenhagen for around €2 million, a move seen as a smart, low-risk investment in one of Scandinavia’s brightest young attackers. His debut season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals, but the numbers don’t tell the full story. Most of those minutes came from the bench, and he never fully established himself as a regular starter.
This summer, the path to the XI narrowed even further. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi loaded Flick’s forward line with fresh competition and pushed Bardghji further down the pecking order. Hence the honest conversation. Hence the search for a new club. Hence the interest from across Europe, including the Premier League, with talks expected to heat up as the window entered its final weeks.
All of that interest now goes on ice.

With the transfer window closing on September 1, the severity of the injury effectively locks Bardghji in at Barcelona for the season ahead. No club will move now. No late twist in his future is coming.
Instead of packing for a new city, he will prepare for surgery and the long, lonely grind of rehabilitation at the club’s facilities. Barcelona have confirmed he will undergo an operation in the coming days before starting a lengthy recovery programme in Catalonia.
The plan for 2024–25 has been rewritten. Bardghji will not be fighting for a place in Flick’s side or auditioning for suitors elsewhere. His entire campaign will be about one thing: rebuilding a right knee that has already betrayed him once, and proving that this second major setback does not define the rest of his career.
