Manchester United Prepares for Season Opener in Dublin

Manchester United step into Croke Park tonight with the Premier League season looming large and very little margin left for experimentation.

Leeds provide the opposition in Dublin in what is United’s penultimate pre-season outing, and with only two friendlies remaining before the opener at Hull City on August 22, Michael Carrick is expected to lean heavily on his core senior players. Minutes now matter more than rotation.

Lammens back, defence under review

There is good news in goal. Senne Lammens has shaken off the illness that ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain and is in line for his first start of the summer. Carrick needs clarity in that position, and this feels like the moment to give it to him.

At right-back, Noussair Mazraoui started against PSG but could make way to ensure Diogo Dalot gets a proper run. Dalot has been short of minutes and Carrick will not want him undercooked heading into the new campaign.

The centre of defence is where a big decision looms. Ayden Heaven struggled on Saturday, and that display may open the door for Leny Yoro to come in alongside Harry Maguire. With time running out to lock in a settled pairing, this could be a significant audition for the young defender.

Midfield puzzle as Mount becomes a doubt

Pre-season has at least offered one clear positive: the emerging partnership between Andrey Santos and Mason Mount. The pair have dovetailed well so far, giving United a smoother link from back to front.

But Mount’s fitness has suddenly become a question. He was withdrawn midway through the first half in Gothenburg, and although both he and Carrick stressed the change was precautionary, there is little sense in taking risks now. That opens the door for Youri Tielemans, who is pushing for his first start of the summer alongside Santos.

In front of them, Bruno Fernandes is set for a bigger role. The captain finally got his first minutes of pre-season at the weekend and is expected to start as the No.10, taking the place of Shea Lacey. That does not close the chapter on Lacey’s involvement; if anything, his outings so far have underlined that he is likely to see more first-team action as the season unfolds.

Rashford returns, but not yet centre stage

Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad in Dublin and his presence alone changes the feel around United’s attack. His future remains uncertain, yet he has been fully reintegrated into the group this week.

Even so, a starting place tonight looks unlikely. The same applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both of whom only recently returned from World Cup duty. Carrick will want them up to speed, but not rushed.

Wide roles up for grabs

On the right, Amad has seized his chance. His performance on Saturday impressed and he has done enough to keep his place for this one. Every touch now is a case he makes for a bigger role once the competitive games begin.

The left flank is less settled. Patrick Dorgu has been learning the role and Carrick may choose to keep him there to accelerate that education. Yet there is a clear alternative. If Matheus Cunha has fully recovered from the illness that sidelined him at the weekend, he is a strong contender to start, adding a different profile and more direct threat.

Mbeumo leading the line as Sesko waits

Up front, the ideal scenario for Carrick is obvious. He would love to start Benjamin Sesko. The problem is sharpness. Sesko has not featured since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season, and throwing him straight into heavy minutes now would be a gamble.

That leaves Bryan Mbeumo as the logical focal point. He has been one of United’s standout performers in pre-season, lively, decisive, and consistently dangerous. With Sesko still working his way back to full fitness, starting Mbeumo as the central striker feels less like a tactical debate and more like an inevitability.

Dublin, then, is more than just another friendly. It is where Carrick’s ideas harden, where places are won or lost, and where United must start to look like a team ready to walk into Hull and mean business.
