Teams Advancing to Knockouts

Mexico secured the first spot in the Round of 32 on June 18. The United States and Argentina also qualified early, clinching advancement after just two group matches. The rest joined by June 27, with Algeria and Austria last to qualify.

How the Round of 32 Works

The knockout phase discards points and standings. Each match has only one outcome: a winner moves on, and a loser is eliminated. If a game ends tied after 90 minutes, it heads to 30 minutes of extra time.

If the score remains level after extra time, the contest is decided by penalty kicks. Both teams select five players to shoot from the penalty spot, and the side scoring more goals advances.

Advancement Through the Tournament

After qualifying rounds worldwide, 48 teams enter the World Cup, split into 14 groups of four teams. Each team plays the others once in a round-robin format. Wins earn three points, draws one, losses none. Ties in points are broken first by goal difference, then goals scored.

The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-place finishers, move on to the Round of 32. From here, single-elimination matches decide who reaches the Round of 16, then quarterfinals, semifinals, and finally the championship match.
