Roma Nears Rodrigo Mora Deal After €50m Breakthrough

For weeks, Roma and FC Porto circled the same deal without landing it. The fee was never the problem. The structure was. Now, at last, the two clubs look to have found common ground on Rodrigo Mora.

Multiple sources in Italy and Portugal report that Roma are ready to pay €25m now to acquire 50 per cent of Mora’s rights, with an option to buy the remaining half for another €25m at the end of the season. It is the same €50m total that has been on the table all along, finally sliced in a way both clubs can live with.

That represents a sharp change of course from the formula that almost went through last week. Roma and Porto had been working on a loan worth €10m, with an option to buy for a further €40m that would turn into an obligation if certain conditions were triggered.

That is where everything jammed. Porto wanted those conditions to be so soft that the obligation was virtually guaranteed. Roma pushed back, trying to anchor the obligation to major sporting milestones such as Champions League qualification, or even winning the Scudetto. Neither side blinked, and talks stalled.

The new 50–50 split cuts through that deadlock. Roma commit serious money immediately but keep some flexibility at the end of the campaign. If they decide not to activate the second €25m payment, Porto will retain 50 per cent of any future resale fee, preserving upside on a player they are about to lose from the dressing room.

The urgency is clear. Mora is not in coach Francesco Farioli’s plans at Porto, and both clubs now want the saga wrapped up within days. After a summer of haggling over clauses and conditions, the finish line is finally in sight.
