UMass Dominates Yale with 5-1 Victory at Rudd Field
AMHERST, Mass. – UMass didn’t just beat Yale on Thursday night. The Minutewomen tore into them.
A five-goal outburst – their biggest haul of the season and their most in almost a year – powered a 5-1 win at Rudd Field, pushing Massachusetts to 5-1-0 on the year and sending the Bulldogs back to New Haven at 3-4-0.
Lightning start at Rudd Field
The tone was set early.
At just 6:04, Annie McCaffrey put UMass in front. Peyton Costello gathered the ball on the left side, just outside the box, and hung a teasing ball toward the middle. McCaffrey met it, redirected, and lifted her finish high into the top right corner. One chance, one ruthless strike. 1-0.
Yale barely had time to reset.
Less than three minutes later, the lead doubled. From midfield, Nia Hislop picked her pass and slid the ball into the path of Caroline Dickson. Dickson drove into the 18, took on the space, and slipped her shot past the onrushing keeper at 9:01. Two goals inside 10 minutes, and UMass were cruising.
The early blitz held up through halftime. Yale saw enough of the ball and created chances of their own, but Massachusetts carried a 2-0 cushion into the break and never really looked shaken.
Curry and Dickson slam the door
Any hope of a Bulldog comeback disappeared soon after the restart.
In the 52nd minute, Monica Curry simply refused to be beaten to a loose ball. Racing shoulder-to-shoulder with a Yale defender, she got there first, drew the keeper out of the box, then glided around her. With the goal gaping and no one left to challenge, Curry rolled in her fifth of the season for 3-0.
Two minutes later, Dickson struck again.
Chasing down another ball in the attacking third, she weaved through defenders to the top of the box and unleashed a driven effort into the back of the net in the 54th minute. First brace of the season, both shots on target, both goals. Massachusetts led 4-0 and the contest was effectively over.
Yale answer, but Terry has the final word
Yale finally found a way onto the scoresheet in the 72nd minute, converting from the penalty spot at 71:29 to trim the deficit to 4-1. It was a rare blemish on an otherwise controlled defensive night for UMass.
There was still time for one more home highlight.
With just over five minutes left in regulation, freshman Lexi Terry stepped into her moment. At 84:57, she took aim from inside the box and curled a shot that snuck around the goalkeeper and into the top left corner. First career goal, fifth on the night for UMass, and a 5-1 scoreline that reflected the Minutewomen’s cutting edge in front of goal.
Numbers behind the rout
The stat sheet looked tighter than the score.
UMass edged Yale 13-12 in total shots, and both sides finished with seven on frame. The Bulldogs actually earned more corners, 7-2, but couldn’t turn those set pieces into a sustained comeback.
Curry led all Minutewomen with four shots. Dickson and Sophie Skabeikis each registered two, while Libby Fisher, McCaffrey, Aline Traber, Amanda Schultz and Terry all took one. Dickson hit the target with both of her attempts; Fisher, Curry, McCaffrey, Traber and Terry each put one on frame.
In goal, junior Leah Nisenfeld gave UMass 62 composed minutes, making four saves and conceding nothing. Fellow junior Julia Rosenberg came on for the final 28, stopping two shots and allowing only the penalty. At the other end, Yale keeper Isabel Willems went the full 90, finishing with two saves while picking the ball out of her net five times.
Next up: one last non-conference test
The five-goal surge sends UMass into its final non-conference match with momentum and confidence to spare. The Minutewomen head to Boston on Sunday, September 13, to face Northeastern at 1 p.m.
Another statement there, and this start to the season might begin to look like something more than a hot streak.
