Arsenal Faces New Injury Concern as Christos Tzolis Leaves Greece Match After Ignoring Substitution Call
Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis suffered a muscular injury while playing for Greece in their UEFA Nations League game against the Netherlands. The incident became more complicated when Tzolis initially refused to be substituted despite his coach's order.
Early Exit in Nations League Match
Tzolis lasted only 18 minutes during the match in Thessaloniki, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He went down clutching his leg and was clearly in pain, covering his face with his shirt as medical staff rushed to his aid. After treatment on the field, he seemed to move without major difficulty and tried to stay on, creating a strange situation with his national team manager.
Substitution Dispute Explained by Coach
Ivan Jovanovic, Greece’s head coach, revealed that he ordered Tzolis off as a precaution but was met with refusal. Talking to Sport24, Jovanovic said:
"How can I handle it, you tell me? I’m his coach, I tell him to come out and he says, ‘I’m not coming out.’ It was a scene that everyone nearby saw. I suspected something was wrong, so I insisted."
The coach emphasized his decisions were made based on medical advice. He added that the substitution was necessary because it involved a muscular injury and it was important to protect the player's health in a non-competitive match.
"We have very good doctors, and when a doctor advises that the player should not continue, I must follow that advice and replace him immediately," Jovanovic explained.
Fitness Worries Increase for Arsenal
After some resistance, Tzolis finally came off the pitch, even dropping back briefly to defend a corner before heading to the dugout. Jovanovic remains hopeful the injury is minor, suggesting it might be just a temporary twitch.
This adds to a challenging international break for Mikel Arteta’s squad. Kai Havertz also picked up an injury in the same game against the Netherlands, increasing the club’s medical concerns. Meanwhile, captain Martin Odegaard suffered a tough tackle from Bernardo Silva in a match against Portugal but was declared fit to play against Norway afterward.
Upcoming Matches and Hopes for Recovery
Tzolis is expected to miss Greece’s next Nations League match against Germany this weekend. Further tests will clarify the extent of the muscle injury. Arsenal will be hoping for good news as they prepare for a busy period in the Premier League, where losing key players could prove costly.
