Holger Rune’s First ATP Tour Match Since Achilles Injury Set at Japan Open

After a strong comeback in the Davis Cup just over a week ago, Holger Rune is preparing for his first ATP Tour match since suffering an Achilles tendon tear. The Danish player, sidelined for nearly a year, impressed by winning both his matches against Bulgaria’s Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov during the Davis Cup.

Rune’s last tour-level appearance was at the Stockholm Open in October 2025. Now, he will compete at the Japan Open in Tokyo, looking to climb back up the rankings from his current position of 188th in the world. Rune had previously reached as high as fourth globally.

Rune’s Japan Open Draw

In Tokyo, Rune’s opening match will be against French competitor Kyrian Jacquet, marking their first career meeting. If Rune wins, he faces a challenging second round against either Casper Ruud or Luciano Darderi.

Advancing further could set up a quarterfinal clash with Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti, both players Rune has beaten before. Should Rune reach the semifinals, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is the likely opponent.

Making it to the final would potentially pit Rune against US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or the young talent Rafael Jodar, aged 20.

Rune’s History at the Japan Open

This marks Rune’s third appearance at the Japan Open, where he has performed well in previous years. In 2024, he made it to the semifinals but lost a close match to Arthur Fils. Last year, he reached the quarterfinals and will be defending 100 ATP points this time around.

Following the Japan Open, Rune must defend 200 ATP points at the Shanghai Masters, where he made the quarterfinals in 2025. Then, at the Stockholm Open, where he sustained his Achilles injury, Rune will defend 100 points earned from reaching the semifinals.
