Thuram Faces Knee Decision as Juventus Worry Over Fitness

Khephren Thuram’s stop-start Juventus career has hit an early crossroads. The French midfielder has been left out of the squad for this evening’s Serie A meeting with Parma and now faces a decisive consultation next week that could lead to knee surgery.

The issue is serious and persistent. Thuram has been struggling with patellofemoral syndrome since the end of last season, a condition that affects the area where the kneecap meets the thigh bone and can severely limit a player’s ability to accelerate, turn, and strike the ball cleanly.

That problem has never really gone away. During pre-season he was largely kept apart from the main group, working on an individual programme while his teammates built rhythm and chemistry. When Juventus opened their Serie A campaign against Frosinone last week, Thuram was already missing. Now he is absent again, this time for the home clash with Parma at the Allianz Stadium, and the timeline for his return is drifting into uncertainty.

The next step will be decisive. According to Sky Sport and Gazzetta, Thuram will travel to France next week to consult specialist Bertrand Sonnery Cottet, a leading knee surgeon well known in Turin. Sonnery Cottet is the same doctor who operated on Gleison Bremer for cruciate ligament and meniscus damage, and on Federico Gatti for a meniscus problem in recent years.

The choice is stark: manage the condition conservatively and hope it settles, or opt for surgery and accept a longer spell on the sidelines in exchange for a more definitive fix. Either way, Juventus are braced for the possibility that they may be without the midfielder for some time.

Luciano Spalletti has not tried to disguise his anxiety. Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Juventus coach admitted he was “very worried” about Thuram’s condition, a rare moment of blunt concern from a manager who usually keeps injury updates tightly controlled.

For a club trying to build a new spine and a player expected to become a central figure in midfield, the stakes are clear. The next week, and that meeting in France, will go a long way to deciding how much of this season Khephren Thuram will actually play.
