Which Teams Remain in World Cup 2026?
The battle for the World Cup 2026 round of 16 is almost set, with only three spots still open. Recent victories by Spain, Switzerland, and Portugal secured their advancement after tough matches on Thursday and overnight. Their wins ended the runs of Austria, Algeria, and Croatia, who were eliminated in the knockout stage.
This tournament marks the first time the World Cup features 48 teams, resulting in an additional knockout round. From the group stage, 32 teams progressed: 12 group winners, 12 runners-up, and the eight best third-placed teams. This number will be reduced to 16 as the next round begins Saturday.
Current Teams Still Alive (As of Friday 3 July)
- Group A: Mexico
- Group B: Canada, Switzerland
- Group C: Brazil, Morocco
- Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia
- Group G: Belgium, Egypt
- Group H: Spain, Cape Verde
- Group I: France, Norway
- Group J: Argentina
