Juventus Signs Jhon Lucumí as New Defender

Juventus finally have their defender.

All summer, the club circled the market, linked with names across Europe while everyone in Turin knew the same thing: the back line needed fresh legs, authority, and a bit of bite. On the week the new season kicks off, the wait ends with a signing they have been working on for months.

Signing Confirmation

Jhon Lucumí is in.

Juventus confirmed on Monday that the Bologna center back has joined in a deal worth up to €22 million. The Bianconeri will pay an initial €19.5 million, with potential bonuses of up to €2 million tied to performance objectives, plus ancillary costs that could reach €0.6 million.

It is not just another transfer for Lucumí. The 28-year-old Colombian, coming off a strong World Cup campaign, had his mind set on Juventus early in the summer. He turned down other options, holding his line while the two clubs negotiated the fee. Bologna and Juve finally closed the agreement late last week; the player has now landed the move he pushed for all along.

Contract Details

Lucumí has signed a four-year contract running until June 30, 2030, and is expected to earn around €2.5 million net per season.

The official club statement laid out the structure clearly: €19.5 million payable over three financial years, ancillary costs up to €0.6 million, and bonuses capped at €2 million if certain targets are met. No frills, no clauses to decipher. Juventus are paying for a defender entering his prime, and they expect him to anchor their back line for years.

Previous Performance

Lucumí arrives in Turin after four seasons with Bologna, where he quietly became one of Serie A’s most reliable central defenders. He stood at the heart of the club’s rise under Thiago Motta, playing a key role in their surge to Champions League qualification and then in the Coppa Italia final triumph a year later. He was not a rotation piece; he was a constant. In each of his four league campaigns with Bologna, he logged at least 2,200 minutes in Serie A, an ironman presence in a demanding system.

That consistency is precisely what Juventus have been missing. A defense that once defined an era has aged, been broken up, and reshaped. Now, with Lucumí stepping into the fold on a long-term deal, the club have made a clear statement about who they trust to help lead the next version of the Bianconeri back line.

The question now is simple: how quickly can he turn that Bologna reliability into Juventus authority?
