Sunderland Sign Thomas Meunier to Strengthen Squad

Sunderland have turned to one of European football’s most travelled full-backs to launch their summer rebuild, landing Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal after his exit from Lille.

At 34, Meunier arrives with a career’s worth of hard miles and hard lessons behind him. More than 550 senior club appearances. Club Brugge, Paris St-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor, Lille on the CV. Three Ligue 1 titles in Paris. And 83 caps for Belgium, including a place in the squad at the 2026 World Cup.

This is not a prospect. This is a statement of intent.

A first signing with heavyweight pedigree

Meunier becomes Sunderland’s first signing of the season, a summer that has already seen forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil depart. Into that gap steps a player who has lived at the sharp end of the game for more than a decade.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi made no attempt to play down the significance.

“We are delighted to welcome Thomas to Sunderland,” he said, outlining a profile that reads like a blueprint for exactly what this squad has been missing: experience, leadership, professionalism, and quality on both sides of the ball.

From Bruges to Paris, from Dortmund’s Yellow Wall to the intensity of Turkish football, Meunier has operated in dressing rooms that expect trophies, not excuses. Sunderland are banking on that mentality rubbing off.

“Throughout his career he has consistently performed at the highest level, representing some of Europe's biggest clubs, and Belgium on the international stage,” Ghisolfi added. “Thomas is a player who understands what it takes to compete for success, and we're confident his mentality and character will have a positive influence on the squad.”

A veteran still chasing big nights

Meunier will join up with the squad in early August, stepping into a club on the brink of something it has not tasted in more than half a century: European football.

For Sunderland, it is a return to a stage they last graced 53 years ago. For Meunier, it is familiar territory. He has spent much of his career under midweek floodlights, measuring himself against the best sides the continent can offer.

That, he admits, was a major pull.

“I'm very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career," he said. "The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it's a challenge I've wanted to experience.

“When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward. Competing in Europe was also a big factor in my decision because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies.

“I hope I can bring my experience to the squad, both on and off the pitch.”

Sunderland’s next step

For a club trying to turn promise into a sustained presence at the top level, this is the kind of signing that changes the temperature in the room. A player who has shared pitches with superstars, navigated title races, and survived the scrutiny that comes with Belgium’s golden generation.

The question now is simple: can that wealth of experience help carry Sunderland through the demands of the Premier League and the strain of a long-awaited European campaign, all in the same season?
