Sullivan's Historic Call-Up to U.S. National Team

Sixteen-year-old Sullivan is set to take his first real step onto the senior international stage.

The Philadelphia Union prodigy will be among the 26 players called up by Mauricio Pochettino for a four-game U.S. camp running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6, a reward for a blistering stretch of form that has dragged a once-stuttering Union side firmly into the playoff picture. Since the World Cup break, Philadelphia haven’t lost a league match, and Sullivan has been right in the middle of that surge.

He isn’t a bolt from the blue. Sullivan has been woven into the U.S. Youth National Team system for years, first pulling on the shirt at U-15 level and growing into one of the most closely watched talents in his age group. This call-up feels less like a gamble and more like the natural next step.

The stakes, though, are historic. If he sees the field in any of the four friendlies, Sullivan will become the second-youngest player ever to appear for the U.S. senior team, slotting in behind Freddy Adu, who made his debut back in January 2006. That’s the kind of company that follows a player for the rest of his career.
