Tottenham’s first home outing of the season brought a better display than the opening weekend. The outcome, though, felt painfully familiar.

Spurs went toe‑to‑toe with Newcastle for long stretches on Saturday, matched their visitors in tempo and territory, and carved out enough chances to expect a different story. They just didn’t finish. Newcastle did. Two second‑half strikes from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa settled a 0-2 defeat, a scoreline that echoed too many nights at this ground last season.

This was Omar Marmoush’s Spurs debut, a glimpse of what the summer rebuild is supposed to look like. He worked, he probed, he chased lost causes. The cutting edge around him never quite arrived. Savio, another of the headline arrivals, never even made it to the pitch, ruled out before kickoff with what the club called “muscle fatigue.” For a side trying to knit together new signings and returning players, that absence mattered.

The pattern was brutally simple. Spurs competed, created, and then cracked. Missed chances at one end, punishment at the other. Once Elanga broke through after the interval, the tension inside the stadium turned to resignation. When Wissa added the second, it felt like last season’s script had simply been dusted off and reused.
