The lights go on at the Estádio José Alvalade on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and so does Sporting CP’s latest tilt at the UEFA Champions League. Matchday 1 of the new league phase drops them straight into a test of nerve and quality against Turkish champions Galatasaray.
Both arrive with confidence. Neither is used to losing right now.
Sporting sharp in Portugal, chasing Porto

Victor Osimhen, Lucas Torreira and Gabriel Sara all found the net, a trio that says everything about the blend in this squad: a lethal striker, a relentless midfielder, and a creative presence arriving from deeper positions.
The question is whether Osimhen will be there to lead the line in Lisbon. He is dealing with an adductor issue, and his availability remains uncertain. For a side that leans heavily on his movement and finishing, that’s not a minor subplot. It could shape how bold Galatasaray are prepared to be away from home.
Even so, the predicted XI suggests Buruk will not park the bus:
