Scott McTominay to Undergo Surgery for Heart Issue

Scott McTominay will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League campaign after Napoli confirmed the midfielder is to undergo corrective surgery for a minor heart issue.

The Serie A club announced on Tuesday that the former Manchester United man has been diagnosed with what they described as “a mild benign arrhythmia” – an irregular heart rhythm classed as non-serious and not considered a significant threat to his overall health.

Even so, the condition requires intervention. Napoli revealed McTominay will undergo a cardiac arrhythmia ablation in the coming days, a procedure designed to correct the rhythm problem and allow him to return to full training without restriction.

It means an abrupt pause to what had been an encouraging start to his new chapter in Italy. McTominay will sit out all of Napoli’s fixtures in September, including next week’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, a tie in which he was expected to play a central role.

Impact on Scotland

The timing also hits Scotland hard. New head coach Sebastien Pocognoli will be without one of his key leaders for his first four matches in charge – a double-header against Slovenia, followed by games against Switzerland and North Macedonia in the Nations League.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation in the coming days,” read Napoli’s brief statement. “He will be available again after the international break.”

For club and country, the message is clear: a short spell of absence now, with the expectation of having McTominay back, fully cleared and ready to drive the season when the international window closes.
