SC Cambuur Supporters Injured by Fireworks During Match

SC Cambuur say five of their supporters suffered “burns, hearing damage and eye injuries” after fireworks were hurled from the away end by Feyenoord fans during Sunday’s league match.

The game at the Kooi Stadion was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a block of travelling supporters ignited a mass of red flares. Fireworks followed, some of them launched towards sections holding home fans.

The noise and chaos cut straight through the occasion. Cambuur later confirmed that five supporters had been injured in the incident.

In a strongly worded statement, the club condemned the scenes, insisting: “It should be clear that setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever.”

Promoted back to the Eredivisie last season after three years in the second tier, Cambuur now find themselves dealing with an off-pitch crisis instead of simply enjoying their return.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from the behaviour. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and revealed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who worked as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, apologised in person to SC Cambuur after the final whistle.

Both clubs now want consequences. Cambuur have pledged to work with authorities to identify and punish those responsible, while Feyenoord said they will request access to camera footage to help track down the offenders.

On a night that should have been about football, the lasting image is of flares, panic and injured supporters — and the question of how Dutch football intends to stop this happening again.
