Saudi Arabia Squad Announcement for Gulf 27

Georgios Donis is about to show his hand.

The Greek head coach of Saudi Arabia will announce his final "Green Falcons" squad for the Arabian Gulf Cup on Wednesday, according to Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya, locking in his choices a week before the tournament kicks off in Jeddah.

Gulf 27 starts on 23 September and runs through to 6 October, with Saudi Arabia hosting the regional showpiece and chasing a title that has eluded them for 23 years. Their last triumph dates back to 2003 – a gap that weighs heavily on every new generation that pulls on the green shirt.

This time, Donis must go into battle without his biggest star.

Captain Salem Al-Dawsari has been ruled out of the tournament through injury, a major blow to both the dressing room and the team’s attacking edge. There is also real concern over right-back Saud Abdulhamid, whose potential absence would strip the side of one of its most reliable outlets on the flank.

The timing could hardly be more brutal. Hosting the competition brings expectation, not patience.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn into Group One, a demanding section featuring Iraq, Oman and Kuwait. Only the top two will reach the semi-finals, leaving Donis with little margin for error as he weighs up form, fitness and experience before unveiling his list.
