Santos Exit Copa do Brasil Amid Neymar Injury Controversy

The mood at Santos curdled fast. A goalless draw with Palmeiras at Vila Belmiro sealed their Copa do Brasil quarter-final exit after a 3-0 first-leg defeat, but the scoreline quickly slipped into the background. All eyes – and tempers – turned to Neymar and the state of the pitch.

The forward limped off at the end of the first half with a right hamstring injury, and he did not wait long to identify his culprit. He went straight to Instagram and tore into the grounds staff.

“I want to congratulate our groundsman at Vila Belmiro. Yesterday, it was the worst pitch the stadium has ever seen, riddled with holes, because they had to uncompact it the day before the match. Unbelievable!” he wrote. “On top of playing against the opposition, we were battling the pitch itself. Congratulations, then... What a load of crap job.”

The fury didn’t come out of nowhere. Neymar’s injury was only one in a grim sequence during a chaotic opening 45 minutes. Lucas Verissimo exited early with an ankle problem. Barreal followed as the third player forced off, each incident feeding the sense that the Vila Belmiro turf had turned from stage to hazard.

For Santos, the fallout could stretch beyond the cup exit. ESPN reports that Neymar is a major doubt for Sunday’s Brasileiro trip to Internacional at Beira-Rio and is not expected to feature. With their star sidelined, Arthur is set to step into the spotlight, likely making his debut in an advanced role, operating almost as a classic number 10.

While Santos counted injuries and recriminations, Palmeiras saw an opening and pounced.

Never shy about stoking a rivalry, the Alviverde used their social media channels to twist the knife, turning Neymar’s complaints into ammunition. They drew a sharp contrast between the natural grass at Vila Belmiro and the synthetic surface at Nubank Parque, where the first leg had been played.

“We want to congratulate those responsible for the Nubank Parque field... No matter the day, the grass is always perfect and without holes, because it is cared for daily. You can believe it!” the club posted on Thursday.

Then came the real jab, echoing Neymar’s own words back at him.

“Besides offering a good playing field for the opponent, our athletes feel safer because, during runs, the surface is always even. It's no coincidence that Palmeiras is the Serie A club with the fewest injuries in the last five years... Congratulations, you know? Great job.”

A quarter-final exit, a star limping off, and a rival gloating about their pristine surface. For Santos, the wounds from this tie run deeper than the scoreline – and the next steps in the league will show just how costly that torn-up turf really was.
