Sam Rooney's Dramatic Extra-Time Winner Sends St Patrick's Athletic to FAI Cup Quarter-Finals

Sam Rooney, 17, fired St Patrick's Athletic into the Club Orange FAI Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic extra-time winner, as the Saints roared back from 2-0 down to dump holders Shamrock Rovers out at a raucous Richmond Park.

Rovers looked in complete control at the break. Jonathan Afolabi struck first, and Michael Noonan added a second, punishing a wasteful St Pat’s side that had carved out the bulk of the first-half chances but failed to take them.

The game looked to be slipping away. It didn’t.

Luke Turner lit the fuse for the comeback, pulling one back to drag the home side into contention and turn up the noise around Inchicore. Rovers, who had been cruising, suddenly found themselves penned in, the tempo rising with every Saints attack.

Then came the flashpoint in stoppage time. Aidan Keena went down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, to fierce Rovers protests. Keena took responsibility himself, driving the penalty low. Ed McGinty guessed right and almost kept it out, but the ball squeezed past him and Richmond erupted. From 2-0 down to 2-2 at the death. The holders were rocking.

Extra Time

Extra-time belonged to the teenager.

Early in the first period, Rooney arrived with the composure of a veteran, finishing what proved to be the decisive goal of a wild afternoon. Rovers, stunned, could not find a response, their title defence ending with a whimper after a week to forget for Stephen Bradley’s side.

St Pat’s, meanwhile, walk on in the cup, carried by a comeback that will be talked about around Richmond for a long time – and by a 17-year-old who turned a bad day for the holders into a statement night for the Saints.
