Roma in Lead for Mason Greenwood Transfer from Marseille

Roma have pushed to the front of the queue for Mason Greenwood, striking an agreement on personal terms with the Marseille forward and putting real weight behind their interest in the 24-year-old.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Greenwood has given the green light to a move to the Stadio Olimpico, accepting a contract built around a progressive salary. He would start on a net €4 million, with performance-related bonuses layered on top – a deal that underlines how firmly Roma’s ownership see him as a centrepiece of their attacking rebuild.

The hard part now begins.

Marseille value Greenwood at around €55 million. Roma’s opening proposal is closer to €40m. That gap is not small, and talks between the clubs are still live as they search for a figure that works on both sides of the table.

Marseille’s position is complicated by their finances and the shadow hanging over their place in next season’s Europa League. The need to raise funds has grown more urgent, and that pressure is nudging Greenwood closer to the exit despite his strong spell in Ligue 1.

Signs of an impending departure are already visible. Reports in France suggest Greenwood has handed back the keys to his house in Aix, a quiet but telling step that fits with the sense of a player preparing for a new chapter away from Marseille.

For weeks, that chapter looked like it would be written in Istanbul. Fenerbahce had surged ahead in the race, driven by presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who publicly tied part of his campaign to landing Greenwood and claimed to have an agreement in place running until 2030.

Then the politics shifted. Safi lost the election to Aziz Yildirim, and with his defeat the momentum behind the proposed deal evaporated. The Istanbul move stalled, then effectively died, clearing a path for Roma to accelerate their own pursuit.

Now the Italian club stand as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature, with their need for extra firepower aligning neatly with the forward’s reported preference for the capital. Roma want him, Greenwood wants Roma – but the numbers still have to add up.

The next phase is all about negotiation. Roma are expected to keep chipping away at Marseille’s valuation in the coming weeks, aiming to bring the fee closer to their own figures before pre-season gets fully underway.

Any breakthrough will be watched closely in Manchester. Manchester United inserted a sell-on clause into Greenwood’s move to Marseille and stand to benefit financially if the French club cash in.

Roma have their man’s approval. Marseille have their price. Somewhere between €40m and €55m lies the decision that will shape Greenwood’s next step – and Roma’s attacking identity for the season ahead.
