Liverpool's Pursuit of Barcola Hits a Dead End as Arsenal Eyes Opportunity

Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit a hard stop in Paris – and Arsenal are watching every twist.

The Anfield hierarchy have been locked in negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, identified as a priority wide option after Salah’s surprise free transfer to Trabzonspor last week. But the gap between what Liverpool will pay and what PSG demand is now so wide that the Merseyside club are prepared to step away.

PSG have set an asking price of around £145 million, according to The Athletic. Liverpool will not go near that figure.

PSG, for their part, are refusing to soften their stance, even with Barcola keen on the move as he searches for more minutes in a squad stacked with attacking talent.

So the talks drag. Deadline day is three weeks away. And patience at Liverpool is thinning.

The club are understood to be ready to pivot to alternative targets to strengthen Andoni Iraola’s thin squad, rather than be drawn into a fee they regard as excessive. One name under consideration is Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old forward who, like Barcola, is on PSG’s books and regarded as a high-upside option.

If Liverpool do walk away, the ripple will be felt quickly in north London.

Arsenal remain in the market for a marquee forward after failing to land Vinicius Junior, who chose to sign a new long-term contract at Real Madrid instead of entertaining a move to the Emirates. Barcola is on their radar, even after the arrival of Christos Tzolis to bolster the left flank.

For now, Arsenal wait. Liverpool’s stance could open the door.

Mikel Arteta has already made it clear that Arsenal’s business is not done. “Well, that's what we're trying to do,” he said when asked about further signings this summer. “If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that.”

The club have already committed £75m to bring in Bruno Guimaraes, a major midfield signing that underlines their intent to challenge on all fronts. The focus now is on the forward line, where Arteta wants more firepower and more variety.
