Barcelona’s Bardghji Suffers Second ACL Tear

The week was supposed to move his career forward. Instead, it has stopped it cold.

Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that forward Bardghji has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a devastating injury that not only rules him out for months but also kills any chance of a move before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

He is just 20.

The Sweden international went down during a training session on Monday. Initial concern quickly turned into the worst possible news once medical tests were completed: a full ACL tear, surgery required in the coming days, and a long, lonely road back to fitness ahead.

From transfer talks to operating table

The timing could hardly be crueller. Bardghji had been preparing for a departure from Barcelona this summer, after clear conversations with the club and with coach Hansi Flick.

According to ESPN, Flick told the winger bluntly that first‑team minutes would be extremely hard to find this season. With Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi arriving to swell the attacking options, Bardghji was staring at an even deeper place in the pecking order than last year, when most of his 28 appearances came off the bench and yielded two goals.

So the plan was simple: find a new club, find regular football, restart the trajectory that had stalled.

Barcelona had already fielded enquiries from across Europe, including interest from the Premier League. Talks were expected to speed up as the window moved into its final weeks. Bardghji was on the market, fit, and, at around €2 million paid to Copenhagen last summer, still considered one of the more intriguing value bets on the continent.

Then the knee went.

Protected from friendlies, injured in training

The irony will sting. To reduce the risk of exactly this scenario, Barcelona had kept Bardghji out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The idea was to protect an asset on the verge of a move, to keep him clear of the knocks and awkward landings that can wreck a transfer.

He avoided the friendlies. He did not avoid misfortune.

The serious injury struck in a routine training session instead, turning a carefully managed exit strategy into an emergency medical plan. With surgery now scheduled and months of rehabilitation ahead, any possibility of a transfer this summer has vanished. No club is taking on a player with a fresh ACL tear and no clear return date before the window closes.

He will stay in Barcelona, but not in the way he imagined.

A haunting repeat in the same knee

What makes this blow even heavier is its grim familiarity. This is the second time Bardghji has torn the ACL in his right knee. He suffered the same injury while at Copenhagen in 2024, a setback that already tested his resilience and threatened to derail his rise.

Barcelona took a calculated gamble when they brought him in last summer, betting that his talent and recovery would outweigh the medical red flags. For €2 million, it looked a risk worth taking. He showed flashes in his debut season, adjusting to a new league, a new club, and the pressure that comes with the badge.

Now the same knee has given way again. For a 20‑year‑old, that is a brutal line in the medical history.

Future on hold

The immediate picture is clear. Bardghji will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a long rehabilitation programme at the club’s facilities. The season he hoped to spend relaunching his career somewhere else will instead be spent in treatment rooms and gyms, away from the noise of matchdays.

His Barcelona story, which seemed to be edging towards an early, pragmatic separation, has been forcibly extended. Not through sporting conviction or a tactical rethink, but because injury has removed every alternative.

The market has closed on him. The question now is whether, after a second major knee injury before his 21st birthday, it will fully open again.
