Roma vs Inter: A Clash of Perfect Starts

Roma against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico. Two perfect records, one early marker in the Scudetto race, and a fixture that has quietly belonged to the champions for years.

Inter have won their last five Serie A visits to Roma. That streak hangs over Saturday night like a shadow, even as Gian Piero Gasperini presents a Roma side that looks sharper, bolder and far more dangerous than in recent seasons.

Both teams arrive on 12 points from 12, Roma sitting top on goal difference. Gasperini’s men opened with a 2-1 win over Atalanta, then went to Torino and won 2-0 on Monday. Solid, efficient, but not yet the kind of statement that bends a title race.

This is different. This is Inter.

Gasperini’s chance to rewrite a bad script

Roma’s week has already had a test of character. A 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, Bryan Cristante on the scoresheet, showed they can handle a hostile European night. It also took a toll.

Evan Ndicka is unavailable, stripping a key piece from Roma’s back three. Manu Koné remains a doubt. Wesley, who took a knock in Istanbul, is fit again and expected to start.

The probable XI reflects the Gasperini template:

Svilar; Mancini, Balerdi, Hermoso; Lulli, Cristante, Pisilli, Wesley; Soulé, Dybala, Malen.

It’s a team built to press, to run, to swarm. But Gasperini’s personal history against Inter is brutal. Just five wins in 32 matches. Roma, too, have lost nine of their last 11 meetings with the Nerazzurri. If this is the first real test of their Scudetto credentials, it comes against the opponent they have most consistently failed to solve.

Chivu’s Inter show their teeth

On the other side, Cristian Chivu has started his Serie A reign perfectly: four games, four wins, and a team already showing the kind of resilience title winners live on.

Inter beat Napoli 3-2 in a thriller, then produced a wild 5-3 comeback against Udinese on Monday, turning a 0-2 deficit inside 16 minutes into another statement at San Siro. It was their second straight home match recovering from 2-0 down. This group does not panic.

Their Champions League trip was less kind: a 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid, a reminder of the level they’re chasing. Hakan Çalhanoğlu missed the Udinese game entirely with injury, while John Stones limped off and faces a late fitness test.

Chivu is expected to line up:

J. Martínez; Akanji, Stones, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Mkhitaryan, Zielinski, Carlos Augusto; Thuram, Lautaro.

It’s a side that can morph from a back three into a back five, then explode into transition through Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez.

The betting angle: Inter with protection

Strip away the noise and one pattern is hard to ignore: Inter dominate this fixture.

Roma have momentum, home advantage and a fresh tactical identity under Gasperini. Inter have history, depth, and a proven ability to dig themselves out of trouble. In a match this tight, the safety net matters.

Inter on a Draw No Bet line at 1.85 looks a sensible play. The implied probability of 54.1% feels fair for the reigning champions, given their record at the Olimpico and Roma’s absentees at the back. A draw returns your stake; an Inter win cashes in on a club that has made this stadium feel like a second home.

Lautaro, rested and ready

Lautaro Martínez sat out the start of the Udinese game, Chivu clearly saving his captain’s legs for Rome. Expect him back at the heart of everything.

The numbers suggest there’s more to come. Two goals from 3.1 xG in Serie A so far – he’s getting the chances, the finishing touch is only a matter of time. Recent evidence backs that up: a brace in the 3-2 comeback against Napoli, a reminder of his ability to decide big matches almost on his own.

Last season he hit 17 league goals and 22 in all competitions. Now he walks into a Roma defence missing Ndicka, the kind of structural absence that matters against a striker who thrives on small gaps and half-mistakes.

At odds of 2.40 for an anytime goal – an implied 41.7% – Lautaro to score looks generous for Inter’s penalty taker and focal point.

Thuram’s volume game

If Lautaro brings the ruthlessness, Marcus Thuram brings the volume.

The Frenchman is averaging a remarkable 7.7 shots per 90 minutes this season, with 2.6 of those on target. Those are centrepiece-forward numbers, not the stats of a supporting act.

He scored against Udinese. He scored in the comeback win over Napoli. He started alongside Lautaro at the Bernabéu and that partnership should be restored in Rome after Chivu’s rotation on Monday.

Inter have found the net in every game this season. Thuram is central to that storm of pressure. With his current output, three shots feels like a modest bar rather than a gamble. At 1.77 for 3+ attempts, with an implied probability of 56.5%, it stands out as the sharpest value play on the board – the bet that best matches form to price.

The only real concern is an early substitution in a demanding away fixture, but right now Thuram is too important, too electric, to be easily sacrificed.

Predicted scoreline: can Roma break the spell?

Roma have the energy, the crowd and a coach desperate to flip his own narrative against Inter. They also have a forward line that can hurt anyone: Dybala between the lines, Malen stretching in behind.

Inter, though, bring the scars and the steel of champions. They know how to suffer, how to bend without breaking, how to turn a bad 20 minutes into a winning 90.

Prediction: Roma 1-2 Inter Milan.
Goalscorers: Malen for Roma; Lautaro and Thuram for Inter.

If that plays out, Roma’s bright start will suddenly feel a little less comfortable. And the same old question will hang over the Olimpico: when it really matters, can they ever get past Inter?
