Rodri's Gradual Integration at Barcelona Ahead of Rayo Vallecano
Barcelona eased into matchday mode on Saturday morning, back on the Tito Vilanova pitch with Rayo Vallecano looming on Monday night at the Spotify Camp Nou. Third round of La Liga, first real test of rhythm in front of their own people.
Rodri on his own path
While Hansi Flick put his squad through their paces in the open session, Rodri followed a different script. As reported by Spanish newspaper Sport, the midfielder split his workload between the gym and individual drills, away from the main group.
It is not a setback. It is a plan.
Rodri impressed in his Barcelona debut against Athletic Bilbao, showing in a few minutes why the club sees him as central to Flick’s project. Since then, he has been on a tailored programme, taking part in only a limited number of full sessions. The medical and physiotherapy departments are managing every step, intent on building his match rhythm without burning him out.
Inside the club, there is no alarm over his physical condition. Quite the opposite. The view is that he is ready to contribute and will soon become a key piece in Flick’s structure. But context matters: he returned from his holidays only a few days ago, coming off the emotional and physical demands of leading Spain to World Cup glory.
Nobody at Barcelona wants to squeeze him dry in August.
Rodri is expected to be available for selection against Rayo Vallecano, though a place in the starting XI looks unlikely at this stage. The idea is clear: ease him in, minute by minute, game by game.
Flick at full strength – almost
The session began at 9:30 in the morning at the Joan Gamper sports city, with Flick able to call on every fit first-team player. The tempo was high, the message simple: set the tone early in the season.
Among those out on the grass was Dominik Livaković, Barcelona’s latest signing, taking part in his second training session as a Barça player. Another small step in his adaptation to a new dressing room, a new league, a new level of scrutiny.
Only three names were missing from the collective work: Gavi, still sidelined, and long-term injury absentees Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji. Their absence underlines why Rodri’s gradual integration carries so much weight. Flick’s midfield will need his legs, his brain, his calm.
For now, though, Barcelona walk a careful line: push the group, protect the World Cup winner, and arrive on Monday night with enough energy and control to turn preparation into points.
